Recommended: The effect of homework on students
In today’s day in age, students are overpowered with homework and are forced to stay up until the break of dawn completing ineffective homework. Most students today are sleep deprived due to the abundant amounts of homework assigned to them. The debate regarding how much homework is too much homework is crucial. Some believe homework is, in all cases, beneficial to students and that there is no such thing as too much homework. On the other hand, people believe too much homework is not beneficial to students and teachers should not give as much homework as they do. The idea that homework plays a vital role in the success of all students is false, for homework is not for everyone and too much homework is not beneficial. Teachers should limit the amount of homework given to the students based on the needs of each students. Students should not have an excessive amount of homework due to stress, social issues, and the need for balance between life inside and outside of school. First and foremost, too much homework leads to stress and anxiety. Staring at a book or computer screen for hours trying to figure out a math …show more content…
It is completely unhealthy for students to always be doing schoolwork. A majority of teachers claim they give homework to show the parents what students have been taught (Lohmann). This shows that parents at times do not have trust in their teachers. In the Finnish school system, teachers, students, and even parents rely on trust (Coughlan). Trust in teachers is not something that is very common in the United States. The fact that one of the top three reasons that teachers assign homework is to show the parents their children are learning something (Coughlan) goes to show how there is no trust in the American school system. The Finnish school system is ranked the sixth best school system in the world (Coughlan). The United States is not even ranked in the top
The first major problem with homework is the amount of pressure it exerts on kids. The stress is unpleasant, of course, but this stress also proves detrimental to their health. One problem associated with extraneous stress is sleep deprivation. Sleep is essential to virtually all body functions, both physical and emotional. Kids of the 21st century, however, simply do not receive adequate sleep. In fact, the average teen is only able to sleep seven hours a night, though nine are recommended. No wonder kids doze off in class! Many would love to blame this on the kids themselves. But actually, the most teens can’t sleep until 11 o’clock due to their circadian cycle, regardless of their efforts. And with the help of stressful homework to keep them up even later, those who do get to bed will be kept awake for hours with stress-induced insomnia. In addition, stress serves as a cause ...
Is giving students excessive homework beneficial? Excessive homework is not beneficial to the students; the amount of homework is causing more negative effects. Well what is considered to be too much homework? Studies have shown that too much homework is considered to be more than two hours per night, and that large amounts of homework excessing that time can be counterproductive (Levy). More than two hours of homework is not beneficial, and it can lead to students not having any extra time to do activities, having health problems, and even making homework counterproductive.
They also say that homework allows parents to see what their children are learning and that homework helps them get better grades. It is true that homework is a self-evaluation for students to make sure they understand what they are learning. However, that is not the case. According to Discovery News, “Studies show that 99% of teens said that homework causes stress.” How is something stressful beneficial? How can homework have a positive impact when it is only making student’s lives worse? Equally important, Discovery News also stated: “56% of students said that homework was their primary stresser more than tests or getting good grades.” As you could see from this, the majority of students feel homework is more stressful than things like big tests. Along with homework being stressful, Discovery News states “Students reported sleep deprivation because of homework.” Meaning that students lacked the requirement of the basic necessity of sleep, meaning at least eight hours. Just because of the extent of homework, students entre next day is halted because students are exhausted and incapable of functioning. But, if the amount of homework was reduced, I believe students would not be as stressed and it would be more practical and
There are many beneficial sides to homework, if given the right amount. First of many, students need the practice for new material and in order for them to comprehend or learn it, they must practice it. They must take the time to actually sit down and focus on their work, and understand the work and lesson they are given. Second of all, homework helps the teacher know what their students understand, in order to go over the lesson in class and make sure the children can comprehend it. The teacher can then continue with what they are learning and not have to worry with a few children not having any clue of what is going on in class. This also makes it quicker for the teacher to actually go over the lesson, rather than go back and help the student that did not understand, due to lack of doing their homework. In order for this to be accomplished,
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. There can’t be homework assigned just for busy work, that becomes a waste of time. The homework needs to be assigned as a thoughtful way to engage students, so they know what is being
A study in 2002 shows that homework causes kids moods to increased anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood disturbances among students. (Coulson)Kids have a seven hour day of school and then on top of that teachers are piling up a minimum of one thirty minutes worth of homework in each class. Kids get stressed out when they realize that they can't do anything fun in the evening which is suppose to be there fre. Homework causes kids to increases in stress and sleep deprivation. In time because they have to stay at home and finish their homework April, a researcher at Stanford University found that too much homework negatively affects kids by increasing stress and sleep deprivation and generally leaving less time for family, friends, and activities. (Graham)Kids don’t get enough sleep and get even more stressed out which causes them to do worse in school.Homework increases family and there conflict.Homework increases family conflict. And the more parents help with children’s homework, the more tension children experience.(Coulson)Homework causes more family conflict which tears families
Most important, we have homework every night and some kids forget to do a certain homework because we have a lot. It’s not hard to do but, we don’t feel like doing it every single night except Fridays. After we do our homework one night we come in to school with a whole bunch of answers wrong. Homework is a waste. It doesn’t make sense.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Many students do not enjoy their homework even if it is only studying. These students would not be able to have any free time because there's homework. There should not be homework because classwork is already enough work, it takes time away from other activities, and it does not let kids have independent thinking, so they won’t be able to be hard workers.
Ever since you were a little kid in school you’ve always had homework whether it be drawing or writing a five paragraph essay. There have always been contriverces about whether homework is really necessary for students. A poll was conducted earlier this year showed that 58% of parents thought that their child got just the right amount of homework , 19% felt there was too much and 23% thought there was too little. But homework is very beneficial especially because it can help the students in whatever subject they struggle in. Parents may argue that teachers should be assisting students at school rather than making them bring work home, but i would argue that when students bring their homework home they get
I think students shouldn’t have homework, because it puts to much stress on them. This has personally happened to me many times, the reason being extracurricular activities. Many students do extracurricular activities and most take place everyday and can take a couple of hours. After doing that you go home and are probably tired but can’t because you have 20 math problems that were assigned for homework, also you didn’t understand the lesson that day but if you don’t do it then you get lunch study.
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
In today’s era, students are faced with the tug-of-war situation of too much stress. Should students really be subject to this kind of stress due to tremendous homework hours? Students go to school between six and seven hours a day. Should they really be given homework that takes them all night to finish? Dr. Michael Nagel says that too much stimulation can be bad for a student’s brain. If the brain doesn’t fully mature until the third decade of life, then do we really want put the amount of stress and stimulation on the brain that homework causes? Do we really want to potentially harm our brain?
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
