Prompt 2 Although the American revolution had ended, the 1800’s were a time of great social revolutions. Over the course of the 19th century, the United States witnessed the start of several movements that forever changed American society such as the temperance movement, the abolition of slavery, and women’s rights. These causes are the basis for some of the movements that many Americans are still passionate about today. One important movement was the birth of prohibition which was an effort to ban alcohol in America. Women were tired of having drunk, abusive husbands and started this movement to save the families of the 1800’s. At first, people were just promising not to drink, but the movement became so popular that alcohol was eventually outlawed by the leaders of America. The goal of this movement was to completely get rid of slavery in America. Supporters helped in any way they could; William Lloyd Garrison along with several others promoted antislavery in his newspaper the Liberator. Abolitionists such as Grimke, Douglass, and Garrison all came from different backgrounds, but this made it so that they each were passionate about slavery for different reasons. I think that this is the main reason why the abolitionist movement was so successful in the beginning. The north started to gradually faze out slavery while the south held on tight to it because slave labor was the basis of their economy. State by state, slavery was outlawed, but it was not completely abolished until the civil war. In my opinion, the efforts of the abolitionist movement were very effective.
