Imagine being stuck in a jail all of your life, and being fed the same exact food. Imagine people watching you while you eat and go to the bathroom. That’s life at the zoo. People should boycott zoos because of the limited space for animals, and the mental illness those animals get.
One reason why people should boycott zoos is the limited space the animals get. According to the Zootube video Home Sweet Habitat, it says how big cats have 18,000 times less space in zoos, and how polar bears have 1,000,000 times less space in zoos. These horrible habitat can stop animals from being themselves in ways. One of these is the privilege to hunt.

It creates an image in the little minds of children that animals are to be treated like they don’t matter. They say Zoos are a place where children can learn about the wild, exotic animals, but in reality it doesn't teach them anything only that they are meant to be caged up, which is wrong. Also, it is really painful to see the animals bored and lonely, so why should people keep letting them do this to these beautiful creatures. Animal captivity for entertainment should end to let them go to their rightful home.
It’s always fun to go with your friends and family to see cute and exotic animals when you go to the zoo, right? You may think that they have the best life having people to give them things that want and to protect them, but some of them are actually suffering just for our amusement from being in that small enclosure all day and all night. Animals should not be put in zoos because they can develop many mental and physical health problems due to the absence of some natural necessities and they are not always treated as nice as you think.
Even though zoos try to imitate the natural habitat of each animal, the area for the zoo might not be able to support the animals needed environment. When visiting a zoo many people fail to notice that the animals have living areas measuring an acre or smaller. “Their enclosures are often small, barren, and without shade or privacy” (Laws). “Animals also need to endure dirty living conditions, stagnant water, and hard floors to sleep on at night” (Laws). It’s obvious that in the wild any animal has almost unlimited space to live in. They catch and forage for food naturally and mate naturally.

They are forced to live in captivity and are deprived of their right as animals and are treated unjustly and unfairly. Animals are taken away from their home and family. They have no control over their own life everything is controlled by the zoo. What their next meal is going to be, who they mate with, where they live. Why should animals have this chosen for them? Humans are given freedom and equality shouldn't animals be given this right as well? All of us have come from the same ancestor we all are meant to have the same rights, yet here we are deciding the fate of these animals lives. Zoo animals do not get a choice in what their next meal is going to be. They eat what is fed to them. However, in their natural environment, they are in charge of what they are going to eat next no some human. Zoos decide who an animal has to breed with depending on if it will ensure that the zoos receive a desirable profit. Animals should not be forced to be breed with other animals that is is unjust and unfair because the zoo is taking away their right to decide their own future and what they want to do. Animal rights have become a very serious issue here in the United States over the last few decades. One issue that has been discussed is whether or not zoos serve a good purpose or are they just a torture chamber for the animals. Locked up in small cages so people can yell at them and stare. Or are zoos the key to save our species in an ever growing human population. There are many places where people can go to see live animals such as aquariums, zoos, and safari parks. A pleasant way to define a Zoo is to call it “an establishment that maintains a collection of wild animals”. (Google def) Another way to say that is a facility in which animals are “enclosed in cages for public exhibition”. I believe zoos are ethical; however, changes need to be made to eliminate problems I have discovered. Zoo’s enclosures and parks have been around for quite a while now, and it is the duty of the public to go to these parks to explore a new world and experience the “true” animals. People are attracted to new experiences and to learn about exotic animals and see them in their “natural” habitat, or so owners try to present zoos to the public in that way. The seller ideas to get the public to continue to go to the zoos is gaining new exotic animals that you wouldn’t normally see around your house or near civilization. As stated by DeLuca and Slawter-Volkening, zoos are used to “bringing a taste of wilderness” to its public (3), trying to give a false reality of the wilderness. Later in the same article, they stated that “fundamentally zoos exist to amuse people…..animals are reduced to actors in the play/world created by humans for humans” (DeLuca and Slawter-Volkening 4). This statement shows that humans do in fact enjoy the “fake” over the real, and that animals are only objects or toys used to amuse the people.
This does not change it as zoos are here as conservation and education; we are here to save the animals, and make more people aware of the situation at hand. I believe that we shouldn’t turn our heads or back to problems that zoos are suffering, going through misunderstanding or beliefs of what others say. In the film, Madagascar, zoos are depicted as a sanctuary in which all the exotic animals are kept safe and are open for the public to view. But many would argue that zoos are inhumane, the charging of animals for our personal entertainment is unjustifiable.
