The Dust Bowl
What I knew/ What I wanted to know
Wind blowing things down. Nothing but dust coated in the air. Not even able to see your hand infront of your face. Sand stinging as it hits your body. Debris flying around in the mix of the sand and dirt. Broken wood planks, pieces of scrap metal, torn cloth. This storm is known as the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s.
I knew the Dust Bowl left a huge blanket of dust over everything in Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. Nothing could be grown or harvested. The drought of 1930 dried everything up so nothing could grow. Thus leading to the dust being picked up by the wind and taken to the clouds. So that a huge sand storm cumulated.

Some people were separated from their families lost in these dust storms and were never found again. Still to this day there is still missing people from the dust bowl. People were killed by flying debris in this storm. Others died from starvation, and from breathing in the dust. Nearly 1,000 people died from Dust Pneumonia (Neal “Dirt, Disease, and Death”). People's lungs inhaled so much dust that they would cough up clumps of it, later killing them due to infection. Most families stayed through the drought, starvation and the dust. This is probably why so many people died in this dust bowl. They did not evacuate because they did not want to lose their land.
“It is estimated that approximately two million people became homeless because of the Dust Bowl and the damage it did to their farms.” This is a statement from softschools.com. Two million people homeless due to the destruction to their homes and farms. The dust would collapse many homes due to the build up of the dust on the roofs. Also debris from these storms would destroy homes and break windows. Allowing more and more dust or dirt come into the house, ruining the possessions
