What is the punishment for the deaths of thousands of people? Osama Bin Laden terrorized hundreds of thousands of people in his lifetime. Because of this, he was assassinated by U.S. Navy SEALs on May 2, 2011. The raid started at around 1 a.m. when 23 Navy SEALs arrived at Bin Laden’s military center in Abbottabad. Unsure of that Bin Laden was inside, the Navy SEALs entered the compound. After about 40 minutes inside the compound, 5 men had been killed. No Americans were killed, however, Osama Bin Laden was. Through the use of a video recording drone, President Obama was able to confirm the death of Osama Bin Laden (History.com 1). Bin Laden personally funded his group. This allowed for them to cause a lot of havoc. Al-Qaeda was originally formed in 1980 to aid Muslims fighting the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union pulled out of the Afghan War in 1989, al-Qaeda’s new motive was to rid the Arabian Peninsula of western elements during the Persian Gulf War. When al-Jihad and al-Qaeda merged, the group became more violent than it already was and started terrorizing civilians with bombings and shootings. On September 11, 2001, three planes flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, South Tower of the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon. This was the biggest terrorist attack on the United States as it killed a little over 3,000 people, and scared the rest of the country (History.com 1). This attack was al-Qaeda’s greatest accomplishment, and after 2001, they performed many more suicide bombings and car bombs.
