Introduction for debate school searches lockers essay
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
As time has gone on, weapons and drugs have become modernized, a normalcy in the American household. Younger children don’t realize the magnitude of these harmful objects; they start to see them as a trophy or a toy. Random locker and bag searches have become more frequent across the nation for this very reason. But isn’t this a lack of privacy? A portrayal of distrust?
The random searches of the students and their things can cause a riff between the student body and the school. A major issue that will divide the school is the “lack of trust students may feel as a result of actions they see as an invasion of privacy” and feel as though they can’t make a connection with their teachers. The searches affect the student’s emotions and could “undermine a school's attempt to build school community, trust and respect”. The searches break the sense of family all schools should have.

The majority of schools that engage in searches have the student’s safety at heart. Whether that is protecting students from each other or themselves. Searches are a rude invasion and “students lose privacy by having to submit to locker searches”. Students that are innocent feel as though they are taking the fall for the few students that actually partake in wrong-doing and are upset by the invasion. Even if it is legal to search a student’s locker as “schools own their lockers and therefore have the right to that property”, it can feel shameful for others to rummage through your items. This invasion of privacy is an embarrassment to the students that have to put up with
Decision : Reasonable standard held to be proper standard for determining legality of searches conducted by public school officials.
The school locker is usually the only private space available to a student in the environment of the school. So it focuses many of the main issues involved in privacy of the students. The 4th Amendment of the US Constitution states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized.”
Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves and thereby express themselves selectively. In contrary, the privacy of American citizens are being violated in many ways. The novel The 1984, the article Long Beach Police to Use 400 Cameras Citywide to Fight Crime, and the article That's No Phone. That's My Tracker all conclude that our privacy is being violated in more than one way. Our privacy is being revealed in ways such as the “telescreen”, which can compare to our cellular devices as well as cameras and many people can't feel safe with their life and surroundings .
Which can be having armed officers walk though halls, making sure the school is safe from any harm that could potentially happen.
1. Discuss competition in the search industry. Which of the five competitive forces seem strongest? Weakest? What is your assessment of overall industry attractiveness?
“Lockers searches are a necessary part of security within the school building to ensure guilt or lucid proclamation of the criminals by securing stolen belongings, drugs, or weapons within the lockers”(Hartman 1). The pros of locker searches are the student acknowledgement that the lockers will be searched if necessary ,so students are less likely to bring school-violating objects into the school building. Drug-sniffing dogs are administered to alert administrators if drugs or illegal substances are within the suspected student’s lockers. “The cons of locker searches are the mistrust students might feel for the administrators and the searches, even with the best intentions, can be mistaken as a invasion of privacy because students might keep personal photographs or bad report cards within the lockers”(Hartman 1). Another con of locker searches is the time consumed before and after these searches. Before a locker search policy is administered, the school needs to bring the cause of the suspicions to the school board or discuss with parents and sent notices for students and teachers about the new policy in placed; in simpler terms, locker searches can be issued in private. Another con of locker searches is the disagreements between the school’s administration and the student and parent. In other words, if the student and parent feel the search is unjust, the parents or student can press charges against the school which leads to a lengthy, costly battle. But most of the time, courts may be more lenient toward the school instead of the student because the school always sent out search notices beforehand for the potential of the locker searches. Also, schools states explicitly in student handbooks or guidelines that locker searches
I’m personally a person who likes their privacy. I like to keep all by myself and I don’t like to be bothered. I am for locker searches though. I feel that if there is a logical reason to suspect any kind of dangerous activities that your locker should be checked. I think that it’s horrible and offensive to get your locker checked and not have anything be found. I think that if lockers are checked the person’s privacy should be protected from other peers. I think all other peers should be in class while a locker search goes on with the specific student.
Although some people think that locker searches are a good thing. Some people think differently. Lockers should not be searched. It invades personal space, It breaks trust, and it creates too much time for the administrators.
In modern day society just about everything one does is either being monitored or recorded. Advances in technology has indeed stripped our generation from solitude. One can not even call the bank to handle private business matters without being warned that the call is being monitored and/or recorded. Street light polls especially in high crime areas are equipped with surveillance cameras. Two-thirds of the U.S. population are smartphone owners so one can be getting recored and have no known knowledge about it. Moviegoers who watch Enemy of the State back in the nineties probably did not have a clue that the advances in technology portrayed in the movie would actually be a part of everyday life eighteen years later. The advances in technology and security are pertinent to our country well being. If it was not for such progression we would be faced with many terrorist attack and unsolved crimes. In agreeance with the actor Dean in the film, advancements in security can be a gift and a curse. We are indeed sacrificing personal privacy for the betterment of the nation. Nothing done goes unseen and technology will only become more sophisticated and unrestricted. One never know, twenty years from now we may have cameras instill inside of
Life for a teenager in high school is all the more stressful when you are required to lug around pounds of heavy books and supplies. Not only do students suffer from neck and back pain, but they also have to remember to pack the correct supplies for each day. This issue can simply be eliminated by allowing the use of lockers in educational institutions. Unfortunately, many schools have lost such privilege due to inappropriate usage. Several years ago, many school districts banned the use of lockers in fear that they could provide a ‘hiding place’ for weapons and drugs.
Has your privacy ever been so invaded, you feel like your life is at risk? Do you even know if your life is at risk? People are being watched everyday and do not even know it. In the article, “How Private Is Your Private Life?,” by Andrea Rock, the author believes that people’s privacy is at risk. Similarly, in the article “Steering Social Media,” written by David Raths, the author discusses the issue with teenagers putting their private information on social media websites. Raths’s article also discusses how schools put information online to help students. Teenagers put too much information on social media, schools help protect students’ privacy online, and people’s privacy is at risk.
Businesses would have a room where they store their data which they would need to protect as it would be very important for the business to securely hold. This would be important as the business would need to make sure that the details that they hold of the customers is secure as it could get misused and then the business would be the ones that caused this. The business may start to lose customers and sales as their reputation would be affected. This is important because of the Data Protection Act. All personal information of students must be protected by the school. If this was to go wrong such as hacking, they would have access to addresses of students and information of parents. Also the documents that contain personal information may be misplaced so people that get hold of this would use this for the wrong use such as identity theft. Example of this would be, Moseley park as they would have personal information of the students and they would have a rooms where this is stored, so to protect this when the teachers want to access the documents they store it in a locked room and only the staff would have the key to the door. There would be cameras around the room so they can monitor to access the room. The business would be making sure that they have all of their data backed up so that when they lose something they are able to recover it. This is important because the business may lose data, or they may be affected by a virus so they would have a copy of the data. Also the computer’s hardware may have problems, so the computer might not be working so they wouldn’t have access to the documents. If this was to go wrong the school may lose their documents as the computer may stop working a...
Anyone can sneak into YOUR school wearing a uniform pretending they are a student, and possibly be selling illegal items. Say two people look alike, wearing the same uniform. One of them has committed a serious crime. They both walk by the camera at the same time. You can’t tell them apart. So safety? Same thing as theft. They say this is a free country, when they do this and make students wear uniforms, this curtails their freedoms. The school board is giving off one simple message by doing this...
The first reason to support that mobile phones should be banned in schools is that devices can be used to cheating for instance, text friends about answers during a test, take picture of test questions with mobile phones to send to friends, search the internet to answers during a test, and store information on mobile phones to look at during a test. It is suggested by Benenson Strategy Group (2008) indicated that 65 per c...
