A current event that is stirring much controversy in the media is the story of Bruce now known as Caitlyn Jenner. This story is in the headlines for several reasons. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the subject is not the issue I will be discussing, however, I will address in this paper the debate whether Caitlyn Jenner deserves the title of Hero or not. To analyze this debate we must look at what constitutes a hero in today’s society, what does this individual represent, lastly, is it wrong to use the label of a hero for Caitlyn Jenner? Knowing these answers will hopefully result in a further definitive answer. So what defines one as a hero? In recent years, superhero movies have become extremely popular. We also have been living in a time of seemingly constant war. Our culture “from a sociological perspective, is composed of the beliefs, norms, behaviors, and products common to the members of a particular group.” may view Heroism in a similar fashion based off these events. No matter where one live in this world, war and conflict affect us in one way or another. In this, a hero is often described as somebody risking their own life, while fighting for the freedoms of others. So is Caitlyn Jenner a hero? By definition her actions fit the description, however, her actions are not comparable to a soldier in battle saving multiple lives while risking their own. Again, this definition of a hero surely won’t be held the same to the adversaries of that battle. The term hero actually applies to the perspective it’s who is using it.
