For as long as I can remember, I have been extremely passionate about the sciences. Whilst studying the sciences separately at GCSE, I developed an affinity towards biology and chemistry, and so chose to continue studying them at A Level. I became especially fascinated by the fact that the human body is made up almost entirely of chemical elements. These chemical elements form the genome and control every aspect of every living organism and by forming different sequences of elements and different bonds, unique molecules such as antibodies and proteins can be produced as a first line of defense for the organism. My interest in the genome lead me to research a newly found gene editing technology known as CRISPR, which I decided to make the basis for my extended project qualification. I found it fascinating to learn how easily the human genome can be changed and the benefits this could have for humanity, such as eradicating genetic diseases like heart diseases and introducing genes that would prevent mosquitos spreading malaria. I believe that the completion of my EPQ, based on the ethics and testing of new gene editing technology, will provide me with excellent independent research skills and the ability to evaluate pieces of scientific evidence that I can apply to my biochemistry degree.
I found that Nick Lane’s ‘Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the meaning of life’ was an interesting and informative read. It highlighted the complexity of the mitochondria as more important than just ‘powerhouses’ of the cell, and used biochemistry to theorise the origin of the eukaryotic cell, they carry their own DNA and can be considered responsible for many aspects of life, such as ageing and the formation of the two sexes. My knowledge from A-Level Biology and Psychology has allowed me to appreciate and understand aspects of the human anatomy and physiology and also how people interact individually and with the wider society. Studying Chemistry and Maths has been both challenging but intriguing and I have been able to adapt the skills of paying attention to detail, managing, prioritising and conducting extensive research via these courses.
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.

So here I am headed towards the end of my very first term of college. I finally did it, I got up the guts to take this leap and I am very happy I did. It took me several years of contemplating this decision before finally taking the plunge. I had a lot to consider before doing this such as affordability, do I have enough time in my life, and will I be able to stay motivated to successfully graduate. High School has helped me to refine this passion to the field of biological sciences with my particular interest being molecular genetics. My peers called my "crazy" for undertaking all three science subjects in my HSC course, but for me there really was no other choice. I have excelled in biology with a trial exam mark of 97%. With a Biology degree, many opportunities are opened up from many companies. Once I graduate from Iowa State and I am, unfortunately, declined admission to Veterinarian School, I would pursue a career in research in a laboratory setting. For me to accomplish this goal, I would have to complete courses that focus on genetics and are accompanied by a lab, such as Biology 211 and 211L. After four years and extensive course work, I would graduate with a degree in Microbiology and many opportunities in my field of study. After graduation, I will be pursuing a career in microbiology and will searching for jobs from a variety of companies. In the United States, there are many companies that hire a students with a degree in microbiology, from government programs (Department of Defense) or privately funded companies.
I have always had a love for problem solving; even before I had decided that computing is the path I would like to go down I had always had an interest in how things worked, how to take them apart, reassemble and possibly improve. This course will allow me to improve my problem solving abilities as well as gain more knowledge about both computing hardware and software in a way that I find both interesting and enjoyable. I am writing to state my intention of applying for the Master of Biotechnology at the University of Toronto Mississauga for May 2016 year. My interest in biology began as a child who could never seem to stop catching amphibians, snakes and bottling snails on my grandfather’s farm. Public speaking was also a trait that I excelled at as an elementary student, placing multiple times in my school, and almost making it to regional competitions on more than a single occasion. It was an easy decision for me to transition into bachelors of biomedical sciences at York University, which I will finish in April of this year, but I always knew I had more to express within myself and do for the world.
My main science and math academic goals at the moment is to explore and expand my love for the science and math. Throughout my childhood, I have always been interested in the science and math fields of academic study due to their invigorating nature. As a sophomore and freshman, I realized I had a passion specifically for the biological sciences since life and its processes are so complex and intricate. I never grow tired of learning the complexities and inner workings of all forms of life from substantial creatures such as humans to microscopic animals such as ants. Also in high school, I realized that I reveled in performing activities in the laboratory.

It allows me to be in control because understanding gives me the power to betake myself and seize my potential. While completing my undergraduate class work, I was under the illusion I could graduate with my degree in biology and find a biology teaching position my first year teaching. This did not become a reality for me simply because a large amount of other qualified biology education majors had the exact same plan. Teaching 7th and 8th grade science was not my first choice for a teaching position until I started teaching at Dixon Middle School. After teaching for three years at Dixon Middle School I found I have a passion for teaching middle school students. One of the reasons I enjoy teaching middle school students is for most of the students I teach, my class is their first experience in a science classroom.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
Chemistry is the most fascinating science to me. Chemistry applies to all things in the universe; living or non-living. Everything is made of elements which are made up of atoms of a certain atomic number. Thereafter I took AP Chemistry, I knew I had to choose a career in the field of chemistry. I understand and enjoy learning about chemistry. Chemistry is important, interesting, and ever expanding. Therefore, I must pursue a career in Chemistry.
I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
