People who want to go to college will find a way to make it happen despite their financial state. It is not necessary to make college free. By doing this, arguments of inequality and disagreements will arise, and although the thought of free college means well, is it really the way we want to change the college system?
There are many different ways students can get help to pay for college such as loans and living grants, because even free college isn’t exactly free. Making the tuition free wouldn’t benefit the lower-class students but ironically, it would benefit the already well-off students. There are programs that can help someone with amazing grades get into some of the best colleges financially, which many people apply for. Sometimes, students from wealthy backgrounds choose to not even attend college leading them to futures solely based on their wealth and high school education. Everyone has somewhat of an equal opportunity to get to where they want, some just have to do different things to get there. For example there is so much financial aid that is given to students all over the world to attend college such as grants, loans, scholarships, and many more programs. Seventy one percent of students received some form of financial aid last year, proving that it has truly made an effect on the education of many students that need financial help or come from families that have a poor background. The idea of freedom and equal opportunity that America was built on has sadly been lost and replaced with a system of quality education only being accessible by the wealthy. In-state college tuition should be free for all students meeting admission requirements, allowing students from the full spectrum of economic backgrounds to have the same opportunity to receive the same education. The incidence of poverty in the U.S. is directly linked to educational level. When a college degree is earned, income levels rise (College Board). The best use of federal government anti-poverty funds is not another welfare or assistance program; it is to make college education affordable for everyone.
According to Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities “Many of America's top-performing high school students never apply to the most challenging colleges and universities even though they have the ability to succeed at them. They often come from minority and low-income households and end up pursuing more affordable, less-selective schools instead.” College can be a burden to many students in a variety of different ways, but the most common reason is due to funds. Making college free for students will help this problem by increasing jobs in the work industry that require degrees, they should be affordable to all people at all cost, as well as the funds should be completely cut off because it would increase jobs and help America's economy grow.
As people attend college, fees build up and students loan money and possibly be in debt. Not only that, some may say college isn’t worth it, but it is. Getting a degree pays off at the end, going towards your career path, making twice as much as you would work at a regular job. Students who have received a degree are slowly declining. To make adjustments, college should be free for everyone.
When hearing the words “free” and “college” in the same sentence, that is exciting to anyone who is interested in not paying those thousands of dollars for their pursued education. Along with less funding for the lower levels of education, comes a weaker education. So college might be free, but if you can’t even get into college (due to standardized test scores, GPA, etc.), then what is the point of having tuition-less college? As you can see, there are more drawbacks than benefits to free college tuition once you look past the surface of it. Like I said before, at a glance, it seems perfect, flawless. However, take a deeper look and see all of the things that would need to change in order to sustain nationwide tuition-free higher education.
Although free college may close the gap between people going to college and people not going to college, it will lead to bigger problems in the long run. People who are graduating high school that are ready to go to college, and live on their own should pay for college by themselves. Paying for college out of your own pocket rather than have the money for college handed to you will teach people how to grow up, help with skills that they will need during their later years of adulthood, and by paying for college on their own it might help them feel more grateful towards their accomplishments.
Today students are marching for free tuition. “It is important to stress that the current tuition rates are inflated because schools increase their sticker price in order to subsidize institutional financial aid for low-income students and to provide merit aid for wealthy, high-scoring students” (Samuels). So basically they are trying to get everything they can out of the more comfortable students, but some low-income students can’t get enough financial aid to survive. Thus making it hard for the low-income students to get the right education they are paying for. It makes them having to get one or two jobs, making them slack on their education. That being said this is why we need free tuition. More people will get an education, it 'd be fair for everywhere whether they 're rich or poor. We can take a look at Finland because they have free tuition, and they have been successful with it. “There were five major components to Finland’s success: all education became public and free; teachers became well compensated and highly trained; education became interactive and experienced based; students at an early age received individual attention; and in high school, students were able to choose if they wanted to pursue a vocational track or an academic track” (Samuels).
