When I profess that I adore young actors, I am completely in earnest. And it seems like the ones that the Hallmark network hires are always the crème de la crème. Whether they appear in background scenes, have a line or two, or are essentially the junior leads, I am consistently impressed with their competence as well as their humility. I realize their parents are quite often the reason they are well grounded, and when I noticed Shay Thorsen in the cast list for the sequel to one of my all-time favorite Hallmark films, All of My Heart, I immediately contacted her for an interview. And I am immensely honored to share our recent chat with all of my fantastic followers!
RH: So nice that we could chat today, Shay. How old are you now?

I started when I was about four, but then we moved to Hawaii, and we lived there for about seven years. Then we came back to Canada, and I started acting classes 'cause it was always something I had been interested in besides being something fun to do. Acting became my passion and I love doing it.
Wow! So why did you go from Vancouver to Hawaii?
Well, I couldn't get into the kindergarten I wanted to go to here in Vancouver. So that took us to Hawaii.
Oh my goodness! I'm thinking, "Why did you come back from Hawaii?"
I know what you mean. It's because we're not Americans. That's why we had to come back to Vancouver. As my mom would say, "It's complicated."
That's what I was thinking. I have enough Canadian actor friends who try to come to the U.S., and it can be a very long, hard process. Did you happen to do any acting while in Hawaii?
No, because again we're not Americans. You can only do American acting if you're American and Canadian acting if you're Canadian.
Again, that's what I thought. When you get older, there are ways, but even those can be rather time-consuming and involved. {pause} Back to your career, Shay, what was your first acting credit?
I think the first was an Audi
Education is something I believe in. When it comes to school all I think of is being a future student of Old Dominion University. Ever since the 7th grade ,when I joined the avid program, I have had the dream to go to college. Teachers at Windsor Oaks Elementary school showed me how fun learning is. Plaza middle school instilled in me that knowledge is key to everything. Green Run High School is helping on my way to success. Education is not just the kind of things I do at school, but instead it is learning new things everyday. I am passionate about becoming smarter and gaining wisdom. Growing up, my parents always applauded my hard work ethic in school because they have realized the immense impact that education has. Education has allowed people to thrive more than anything else. Without
Well, my brother's a golfer, so we moved partly because of him. But also my mom wanted to give me a chance to have more opportunities in acting, and so we moved here so that could happen.
If you do nothing, you change nothing. If selected as an honors student, I fully intend to draw on every opportunity available to me through the honors program such as study abroad, research, and internships. Having type one diabetes both motivates and fuels a passion to better communities I am involved with and work with dedication. I will contribute not only my time, but also my personal experiences and motivation to push for innovation and discovery in on-campus research in a variety of different research.
Canadian identity has always been difficult to define. This definition is essential in order to evaluate theatre in Canada. French Canadians appear to have no difficulty in establishing their own identity, both on and off the stage, as they share a distinct tradition. We, as English-Canadians, have continued to define ourselves by reference to what we are not, American, rather than in terms of our own national history and tradition. For English Canadians, this tradition comes not from the nation but instead from community and region. Because English-Canada has such a great cultural diversity, nationality and relevance to our outstanding values and attitudes must define the Anglophone Canadian identity, both on and off the stage.
Q: Why did you come here later 4 years than your family? Did you live alone in Hong Kong when your family was here?
“Were going to Puerto Rico!” my said mom and dad said. We were all so excited and but we didn't know what or where it was, “Puerto Rico is an island off the coast of Florida.” my mom explained to us. “The island has clear water, many beaches, and we have to take a plane to get there!”. I had never been on a plane before so I was even more happy. We talked about it some more, and looked up ‘Culebra, Puerto Rico’. We were going for 10 days and we were leaving in a month. I would miss a couple days of school and so would my sister and her friend.
The minimum education requirements is at least some college experience, although it is not required to have a degree Even though there isn’t a specific amount of years required to be an actor/actress, I would like to get my Bachelor’s degree
RH: What inspired you to become an actress? What kind of training have you had in acting?
(Avenue Q) Unlike regular jobs that you can stay in for a lifetime, acting jobs are usually
While Hallmark wouldn't necessarily show preferential treatment to any actors, there is no denying the fact that certain indtusry profressionals grace the screens of their original programming more often than others. Since Hallmark is such a massive part of my viewing list, I noticed Crystal Balint in a wide variety of my favorites. Recently, Crystal took some time out of her insanely busy schedule to answer some questions I had for her concerning how she started in this business, her notable and current works, and most importantly, her outlook on the industry--something for which I greatly respect her.
live in a media orientated world. Film and television have been, and continue to be, hugely influential in just about every area of my life.
The world is an immense place full of all kinds of people. People who want to enjoy life and have fun with others. People who want to live long healthy lives so that they can watch their children grow and express their skills and callings. Everyone wants to live long enough to make a change and leave a powerful impact on their friends and relatives. However, the world we live in has become sick and rampant of disease, disgust and hatred. People are not living the lives they try so desperately hard to achieve. Many people are suffering and are not able to enjoy all the potential that life can offer. Lack of nutrition and hidden environmental toxic exposure play key roles in the detriment of our health. The general population are struggling to
A home for the next four years. That is the expected feeling I am hoping to gain when I go off to college next year. I always have put faith and trust in my decision making, and I am excited to make this important choice. All the hours and effort of work I have put in during high school, has given me great opportunities and options to choose from. There are so many colleges, so much advertising, and so many different opinions and reviews to take in. I have gone through all the pro and con lists, visit days, and have had multiple conversations about the options I have available. I want to attend a university that will become my new home. A place where I will be able to grow as an individual, meet new people, and study my
Narrative Statement I really think I can make it in the New York Film Academy because I love acting and I have the determination to take on whatever challenge is thrown at me. I loved acting every since I was a little boy. I would watch a movie and try to act like my favorite character in the movie and do exactly what that actor did. My eighth grade year I joined a reading a class. We learned how to read more fluently and enunciate are words better.
I will watch movies with famous actresses/actors. I will watch these movies to help me understand what an actress looks like, talks like, and acts like while on set. I will also practice reciting lines that I heard the actress say throughout the movie. After I practice reciting the lines, I will recite them to my family or others to see if all my practice has paid off. I will get in contact with a local actress who has played in a movie, play, or TV show and I will ask them about their experience being an actress.
