I believe that the U.S entered World War 1 for both economic and democratic purposes. Germany’s dictatorship threatened the world’s democracy. Had they have won and taken over nations, their monarchy would have spread throughout Europe. In a speech before Congress in 1917, President Wilson stated “The world must be made safe democracy.” Not only is democracy favored by the U.S, but it benefits the people in any democratic nation. Instead of being controlled by a government, the people have a say in voting for their ruler as well as their government’s laws. In the same speech, Wilson expressed, “We shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest to our hearts - for democracy...” The U.S was already sucg a strong world power, they couldn’t have just sat and watched the war from the sidelines when they so strongly wanted this. Especially when Wilson, in his speech in 1917 about the sinking, said “I advise that the Congress declare the recent actions of the Imperial German Government to be, in fact, nothing less than war against the Government and people of the United States.” gave the people the impression that this is why America entered the war. In conclusion, I think that the U.S had both economic and democratic purposes for entering World War 1. One sole reason for entering is not a valid enough reason, nor was there only one. Democracy across the world was jeopardized and the U.S also saw that it could eventually make a profit from it. Overall, the U.S’s involvement played a key part in the war.
