Crazy House, a book by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet is a futuristic world in which there are many different “cells”, which are gated communities that all produce different products. The two main characters (Becca and Cassie) live in a peaceful agricultural cell; that is, until tragedy strikes. Becca is kidnapped and taken to an unknown location. The story is told alternatingly through the perspectives of both Becca and Cassie as they try to find each other and survive. The two narrators may be twins, but their personalities are quite different, so their coats of arms are also quite different. Becca, also known as Ridiculous Rebecca, is quite irresponsible. Her coat of arms includes a green ivy leaf, a orange/bronze snail, a …show more content…
red rat, and a maroon bear. The ivy leaf represents “strong and lasting friendship.” This is one of Becca’s main character traits, as although she is irresponsible, she is also very attached to her friends. For example, Becca is put in a prison with many other children who have also been kidnapped.
She creates a close bond with her cellmates, which is very prominent in the story. The color green symbolizes love, optimism, and a strong moral compass, all of which Becca has. Even as she’s put on death row, Becca remains optimistic and keeps her sense of right and wrong. The snail symbolizes determination and perseverance. It is quite obvious why Becca has these traits, as she never stops fighting her kidnappers and wardens, even when everything seems hopeless. The color orange on coats of arms means growth, enthusiasm, and strong emotions. Becca shows all of these, especially growth. This is because in the prison, Becca changes from a carefree spirit to a hardened (yet still happy) fighter. The rat represents cunning and determination. To finally slip out of her kidnappers’ grasp, Becca must have had these traits, otherwise she would not have survived. The color red means military prowess, a high spirit, and strength. Becca had none of these when she was first kidnapped, but the constant fights and torture made her acquire these traits. She soon became an excellent fighter in the ring, and despite all the pain, kept her grit. …show more content…
Lastly, the bear is a match to Becca’s personality as it symbolizes strength, healing, personal health, bravery. As was stated multiple times before, Becca’s time in the prison made her strong and brave. However, the constant activity also made her a lot more fit, meaning that her personal health was getting better. The color maroon represents “the courage and endurance in pain and times of adversity.” There was always some form of pain Becca experienced, before and after the kidnapping. Yet, she endured, making the color maroon perfect for her. Altogether, these colors and symbols summarize Becca’s personality. Cassandra, nicknamed “Careful Cassie” is the complete opposite.
The symbols on her coat of arms are a blue two-headed eagle, a golden serpent, a silver fox, and a green ram. The two-headed eagle represents a protector. If one had to describe Cassie in a word, this would surely be it. This is because Cassie was always the responsible one. She got good grades, and had a job to support herself and Becca. She constantly protected Becca from poverty, as well as convincing her not to do irrational activities. On the coat of arms, blue means obedience, loyalty, and honesty. Cassie always followed the rules, was loyal to the leader of the cell, and was the top of the class until Becca went missing. The serpent represents wisdom, knowledge, and defiance. As I stated before, Cassie was very smart, hence the knowledge and wisdom part. However, as soon as Becca went missing and no one would listen to her, Cassie became defiant. She became an Outsider, trying to figure out what lay beyond her cell. Gold symbolizes (once again) wisdom, along with generosity and an open mind when it comes to learning. Cassie was very generous, as she sacrificed her time to make sure Becca could get food, and she was also very open about accepting the facts that the government hid. A fox stands for a person who use their knowledge and wit to defend themselves. When Cassie goes looking for Becca, she eventually reaches the prison, and becomes a prisoner herself. However, she uses her knowledge to find a
way to escape with Becca. Silver represents sincerity, truth, and peace. Before the kidnapping, Cassie was trying to live a life based on these principals, so she would be seen as a top student and good community member. Finally, the ram symbolizes authority and leadership. As said before, Cassie was the provider of her family. She led Becca along what she believed to be the correct path, and was always the figure of authority. Green, as said before, means long and lasting friendships. Cassie made these on her search for Becca, helping her get out of the prison alive. In summary, while Becca is irresponsible, yet strong and determined, Cassie is intelligent and responsible. Despite the differences, the two still make an unbeatable team.
There are two books I will be comparing, Fever 1793 and The Girl Who Owned a City. The main characters are Matty, a girl in 1973, and Lisa, a futuristic character. They are alike in many ways. They are also quite different. They are both about the same age, though Lisa might be a little younger.
Laura Esquivel uses the color red to symbolize love and passion in relationships. In the following quote "Mamma Elena had come to get a sheet or something and had caught Tita red-handed."(p. 136) The little box that contained mamma Elena's old love letters with her old love, Jose Trevino. Tita, being caught 'red-handed' may symbolize that her hands had been stained and contaminated with the love that was concealed inside the box.
I have very good sight. One moment they were white, the next red, the next blue. Then I got it. They were a woman’s dresses”. At first, I did not pay attention to the colors of the dresses, but then I realized the pattern of colors in order. In this case, I believe white represents light, goodness, and pureness. The red represents anger, blood and possibly murder. The last but not least, the color blue that represents wisdom, loyalty, and truth. It seemed to me that the author used colors symbolizes the story from the beginning to the end. I believe it is a hint for us to what to expect and what not to since Jeffries was right all along the
The pink ribbons on Faiths cap represent faith and playfulness. This is kind of ironic considering her name is Faith and the pink ribbons also mean faith. Faith's pink ribbons are the symbol for the good in the story and show that there is faith with Goodman Brown. "Faith! Faith!" cried the husband. "Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One!" (68) Goodman Brown tries to receive the good from Faith while he is surround by evil. Faith seems to be one of the few "good" symbols in the story and just happens to be Goodman Browns wife. "My faith is gone!"(50)cried he. When Goodman Brown
Each symbol exhibits Janie’s development as she faces freedom, rebellion, authority, destruction, and individuality. These symbols sculpt Janie’s journey into success and mold her into the woman she becomes.
To Kill A Mockingbird has many symbols that have a thematic significance. Flowers and “Mockingbird” type characters are the main types of symbols. To begin, the flowers represent the racism and prejudice that lies within the tight community of Maycomb, Alabama. One instance of the flowers being used as symbolism is when Camellias
Golding uses the symbolism of colors. For example, pink, the color of innocence, portrays the
The first way the author uses symbolism to show the overall theme is with color. Numerous times in the novel Janie is wearing a different color ostentatiously depending on what is taking place. Although the message is oblique, most can find meaning behind it. Starting in the first chapter the color Blue is mentioned. “ … Where's dat blue satin dress she left here in?” (pg.2) This is the beginning where Janie is coming back with nothing and the towns women are gossiping about her status and appearance. Even later the author shows that she wears blue because of Tea Cake, “Wait till you see de new blue satin Tea Cake done picked out for me tuh stand up with him in.” (pg. 115) Traditionally the color blue represents 2 depth and stability. It can also symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. From early on Hurston is indicating that Janie will be some of those traits and through out the novel the reader realizes that Janie is actually loyal, stable, wise, and confident after she is introduced to Tea Cake.
Daisy has a beautiful, innocent, and white look, but on the inside she is an evil wench. The color white symbolizes Daisy’s exterior
The use of diction is powerful, with the gripping use of words and description. Golding creates tension and reinforces his theme and tone with the use of specific words. Many are connotative and therefore create a story abundant in meaning and symbolism. Golding uses colors such as pink to symbolize particular things such as innocence, as shown in the piglets and the island. The word yellow makes the reader think of the sun, enlightenment and Ralph; the words black and red bring to mind evil, blood and Jack.
A symbol can be simple similar to a colour or deep enough to represent a spiritual meaning. The novel, To Kill A Mockingbird is enhanced by many symbols and events that represent the wisdom, theme, setting or nature of a person. Maycomb being a biased town, Mrs.Dubose is one of the most racist women living there. However, the white camellia flower portrays Ms.dubose’s inner self, her real courage and the distinctive person she is. The society of Maycomb quickly judges people either by a rumour or the way their lineage is corresponding to status, race and wealth. Tom Robinson’s race differentiates him regardless of the blame he is not guilty of. The mockingbird symbol
There are 3 colors in the art: black, white and red. That represent for 3 types of people in the America. The artist wanted to criticize the racist during that time. Especially she is an African American. All black people didn’t have the right to vote in that time. The other element of design in this art is line. In the background of the art, we can see that is the American flag. The artist wanted to concentrate that the issue is happen in the America. In addition, it also the symbol of the jail and the face of the woman were sad. Faith Ringgold wanted to say over the art that why we are all human, we live in the same country, we speak the same language but why don’t we have the same right? “With the element of the American flag used, Faith Ringgold turn the flag into prison cell, the star becomes sheriff’s badge, the stripes turn to black bars of jail; white woman pledging allegiance to flag while denying blacks right to vote, she is a prisoner in her own bigotry” (pg 17 text book). The principles of design that she used in the art are balance and contrast. We can see the balance by looking at the stripes in the art and the contrast by the color that Faith Ringgold used in her painting. In the real life, each color in the American flag has its own meaning. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. White symbolizes Purity and Innocence. Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice. However, in God Bless America, everything is changed. One thing we should pay attention in this art is her hand. She putted her hand on her heart like she was praying or wishing that the racist will be stopped and everybody can be
It has been said, that colors in the light spectrum can be used to symbolize a person's mood or emotions. In the case of Blanche and Stanley the colors red and white are being used to symbolize their state of mind. Blanche, which can be derived from the word "Blanco" to mean white, depicts a person who is pure. In the case of Stanley, the color red is used to symbolize his inner anger and misery.
Some of the main symbols of the novel are The Hanging Wall, the colours of the clothing of the different women and the Eyes. All these symbols add different features to the story which are important. Some add fear, suspense, and overall they all add an important understanding of the story line. Margaret Atwood, was able to successfully create symbols which added depth and helped with the understanding of the novel. With these symbols she used in the novel she proved the importance and the positive effects strong symbolism can have with plot and character
They represent Lily's only connection to her deceased mother, besides her blurred memories. At one point in the novel, when Lily is talking to August, August hands Lily a photograph from the past of Lily and her mother. Lily thinks to herself, "I didn't care about anything on this earth except the way her face was tipped toward mine, our noses just touching, how wide and gorgeous her smile was, like sparklers going off (Kidd 275). When Lily sees the image of her mother, she is assured that she was deeply loved. This gives her a sense of peace and relief that she has been longing for. Nevertheless, Lily still continues to struggle with the sadness and guilt of accidentally killing her mother. However, at the end of the novel when Lily is looking at a different photograph of her mother, Lily finally is relieved of the guilt that has burdened her for so long. She thinks, "In the photograph by my bed my mother is perpetually smiling on me. I guess I have forgiven us both, although sometimes in the night my dreams will take me back to the sadness, and I have to wake up and forgive us again" (Kidd 301). Lily is beginning to move on from pain and guilt that has burdened her for so long. Through forgiving herself, Lily is freed from the torment she has held inside of her for as long as she can
