My topic is God Bless America of Faith Ringgold. She is an African-American artist. She is not only a painter but also a writer, speaker and mixed media sculptor. Faith Ringgold was born on October 8th 1930 in Harlem, New York City and she is still alive. God Bless America is one of the most famous arts of Faith Ringgold that was produce in 1964. In that art, she used the oil on canvas and the dimension is 31x19 in. The subject of Faith Ringgold’s God Bless America is the woman on the background of American flag. There are 3 colors in the art: black, white and red. That represent for 3 types of people in the America. The artist wanted to criticize the racist during that time. Especially she is an African American. All black people didn’t have the right to vote in that time. The other element of design in this art is line. In the background of the art, we can see that is the American flag. The artist wanted to concentrate that the issue is happen in the America. In addition, it also the symbol of the jail and the face of the woman were sad. Faith Ringgold wanted to say over the art that why we are all human, we live in the same country, we speak the same language but why don’t we have the same right? “With the element of the American flag used, Faith Ringgold turn the flag into prison cell, the star becomes sheriff’s badge, the stripes turn to black bars of jail; white woman pledging allegiance to flag while denying blacks right to vote, she is a prisoner in her own bigotry” (pg 17 text book). The principles of design that she used in the art are balance and contrast. We can see the balance by looking at the stripes in the art and the contrast by the color that Faith Ringgold used in her painting. In the real life, each color in the American flag has its own meaning. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor. White symbolizes Purity and Innocence. Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice. The idea that art can be a service to people- most importantly a service to poor and disenfranchised people is one that may be disputed by some. However, Elizabeth Catlett and other artists at the taller de Graffica Popular have proved that art could be made to service the poor. Catlett in particular is someone who has always used her art to advocate for the poor and fight injustices. While her activism and political views were very impactful, they were also very controversial. Catlett`s art and activism influenced African American and Latin American art by changing the narratives of Black and Brown working class women. In their books titled Gumbo Ya Ya, The Art of Elizabeth Catlett, African American Art: The Long Struggle, and Elizabeth Catlett: Works on Paper authors Leslie King-Hammond, Samella S. Lewis, Crystal Britton, Elizabeth Catlett, and Jeanne Zeidler speak of the work of Catlett. In a paper titled -----, ---- also speaks of the work of Elizabeth Catlett and her legacy as an activist.
During the process of reading this compilation of works, Portrait of America, many different point of views were aired. The opinion or attitude on the subject was too tainted. The authors were very biased to their perception of the "story". This book could have been much more beneficial if the facts would have stayed to the straight and narrow. Only the detrimental facts needed to be applied to these chapters. For a history class, as broad as this, this book opened too many doors that could not be explained in as much detail as would be liked. Many of the authors enjoyed mentioning the most scandalous moments of the people's lives then dropped the fact without much support or follow through as to what happened to cause or end these events. Brief summaries only tease the mind, and with the course load of most students, there is hardly extra time to investigate the matter further in detail. For a class such as History 152, biographies and/or documentary style books are more worth the while of the student. For instance make a list of a selection of novels that could be read for the class, so that every student can then explore in depth what that student thinks is interesting. Although the book was teasing in nature the chapters did flow well and were easy to read. The procession of the chapters had wonderful transition as to not loose the student. While proceeding through this book there were several different reoccurring topics that appeared. This paper will discuss these two reoccurring topics: the civil rights movement and former presidents.
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
The noose, Klan hood, and the Native American headdress represent how America mistreats other people. The noose and the Klan hood show that America is a place that discriminates against black people in its own society. Even though the Nazi party murdered millions of people in cold blood, they still saw our racism as a point they could use to persuade their citizens that we are evil. The Native American headdress has the same metaphor but for the Native American people. Our ancestors killing the Native Americans is another example of how we are malicious. The top piece gives a more somber feeling, with the black face staring blankly forward, showing no emotion. The portion of Ntozake Shange’s poem, no more love poems #3, lady in blue, for which the piece was painted, states “we deal wit emotion too much/ so why don’t we go on ahead, & be white then/”. This blank, emotionless stare shows the expectations for black women to be stoic, whereas it is acceptable for white women to display emotion without being labeled as overreacting or crazy. Ellison uses colour such as white, gold and red in order to transmit the story’s themes and issues. White people have power over black people and the use of a gold color demonstrates it: “I would use both hands. I would throw my body against the boys nearest me to block them from the gold” (21). The gold represents the power, the wealth and the prosperity of the white people. Instead of grouping up together against the white, black people continue to fight for the money. The tone of the short story “America and I” changed dramatically over the course of the narrative. The author, Anzia Yezierska, started the story with a hopeful and anxious tone. She was so enthusiastic about arriving in America and finding her dream. Yezierska felt her “heart and soul pregnant with the unlived lives of generations clamouring for expression.” Her dream was to be free from the monotonous work for living that she experienced back in her homeland. The people of the black culture need a motivating force behind their community. They need a black aesthetic to motivate them and incline them to support the revolution. The black aesthetic itself will not be enough to motivate the people; they will need black art to help them understand what they are supporting. The art in the black culture needs an aesthetic to get the message across to its viewers and allow them to understand the meaning behind pieces of artwork. One of Ron Karenga’s points is how people need to respond positively to the artwork because it then shows that the artist got the main idea to the audience and helps to motivate them to support the revolution. God bless America. It’s a song, it’s an anthem, and it bears the hopes of many Christian Americans today. Like the man who built his house in the sand, we (Americans) have built our hope for salvation on a “in God we trust” government; and like the house in the sand, are learning that our foundation is not solid. Our faith in the sand is crumbling before us. So we sing “God bless America” a little louder. We raise our hands as we pray for God to bless our nation. We take His name in vain as we charge to take the freedom of others in the name of the freedom we have been “blessed” with. I must have missed the passage in the Bible that talks about America being God’s chosen nation.
The song that I chose for for my Essay is “Neil Diamond-America”. This song is all positivity on American ethics and American culture. All it talks about it America's great accomplishments. It talks about how great that is that people from other countries are coming from land and by sea just to see how amazing it is to live in America. It talks also made me realize that most Americans don't see America in the same way, that we don't realize the places we have and how truly great our country is. This song analyzes what a foreigner looks in in finding a safe haven or just a new place to live.
