Imperialism is when a country’s power extends and they are able to take control, dominate, and colonize other countries because they have enough economic and/or political power to do so. The cause of imperialism was industrialization. Every country wanted their own raw materials such as cotton, silver, silk, and much more. Although every country wanted these raw materials it was clear that the Europeans were the most powerful during the imperialism era. The Europeans colonized land to bring in products for themselves. They mainly colonize Africa and Asia. Europeans wanted colonies to secure their raw materials and products, especially cotton to continue their industrial economy (Imperialism crash course). “The White Man’s Burden” message was that the white men had to travel to the colonies to get their “profit” in other words their products. Sometimes the white men were terrified for their life because they are taking a risk, but they are showing their true pride by dominating the land. “To veil the threat of terror // And check the show of pride” (Duiker, 2017, pg. 546). Even though the white men may have had to fight to get their products, which meant fighting famine and disease, their goal was to come home from the colonies with a large number of raw materials. “The Black Man’s Burden” overall message was that the Africans had to fight for their own materials. The white men would take over their colonies and would do as they pleased. The colonizers had a lot more force and power like technology which made it very difficult for the Africans to fight for their materials. The “Imperialism and the Global Environment” also described that the Europeans demanded land from the African and Asians in order to get their cash crops. Colonizers would drill for oil in their land and dug mines for other products like gold, tine, iron ore, and copper” (Duiker, 2017, pg. 582).
