How would you like it if someone made all the rules for you, and you had no say? How would you feel if someone else took all of your money and used it for themselves? This is how the American colonists felt under the rule of King George III. Not only did the King make laws for the colonists and gave them no representation in government, but he imposed harsh taxes on them to collect money for England. The colonists wanted their own government, where they could have their own people representing them. They also did not think it was fair that their money had to go to England. He wrote the pamphlet “Common Sense” in 1776, that advocated for the American Revolution. “Common Sense“ sold over 100,000 copies. The reason he wrote the pamphlet was because he wanted to get the word out and get people on his side. The “Common Sense” pamphlet asked: Why should the colonies be tied to Britain when it is thousands of miles away, why should the colonists submit to laws that will injure their trade and industry, and why should the colonists show loyalty to a king who is against them or takes control without representation? Thomas Paine was involved in both wars. During the American Revolution, he wrote “Common Sense” to get people involved and encourage them to fight for the freedom. During the French Revolution, he wrote “The Rights of Man”, which opposed rule by monarchs and wealthy aristocrats. The American Revolution was started to allow for freedom of religion and for freedom from oppression. The Americans succeeded in winning the war and claiming their independence and they gained economic and religious freedom. When the war was over, America was able to form its own government, represented by its people. The American Revolution was not as bloody as the French. The French Revolution was started because the people wanted to get rid of the monarchy as well. The government imposed taxes on the people to support the king’s lifestyle, and the majority of the French people had nothing. The French Revolution was very violent and bloody. Even though they were able to overthrow the monarchy, gaining their freedom was a long process.
