What type of food is real food?

Food is the powerhouse of the body that provides the energy for daily activities. The talk on food is almost endless in the modern world. Concerns about food range from safety, nutrient value to its affordability. People have developed diverse opinions on the issues surrounding food. Safety, especially against food poisoning, has been the major point of interest to both the public and the health care professionals. It is common to see expiry dates or ‘sell by date’ warnings on food products to alert consumers of the looming danger if the food is consumed at a later date. However, the most intriguing debate on food to me is based on the question ‘what is real food?’ I have found myself caught trapped to give my opinion on the matter. Occasionally I avoid the question but seeing that it is a thing of this world we live in I decided to visit several places to get a piece of other people’s minds.

Pasta Brioni

The first place I stopped by was an Italian restaurant called Pasta Brioni. Not only did I want to have my fill, but also to get answers on what exactly real food meant to the people in this restaurant. I had an interview with the manager.

Real food should leave you with no doubt as to which part of Europe or Asia it is originally made. In short, young man, real food is authentic food.” This response took me aback for a while. I was used to saying real food is the best or the most mouth-watering food. Having reflected on this, I had to ask him whether by...

...checked the standards of unprocessed food and found that if food was grown using a lot of fertilizer or the seeds were chemically modified then they were not qualified to be termed as organic foods (Miller 2008). With this, I thought it is right to say that organic food is real food because it contained nothing more than what is needed naturally to grow a plant or sustain an animal to maturity.

My visit to the campus did not change a lot since most of them agreed with my initial thought on real food. However, Sandra’s opinion shifted my thought equilibrium towards healthy food as real food. I concluded that I was not real if it made one’s health ‘unreal.’(Lefevre, 2009)

Conclusion

Whatever food you find in a restaurant that has some traits of authenticity, is 97% organic and is safe for one health should be termed as real food.
