What role does higher education play in the implementation of the CCSS? Teachers must not only show motivation for teaching but must also demonstrate that their students are achieving the goals and standards of the education system in which they operate. With this rising awareness of making children college ready and globally competitive, the significance of teacher training to achieve both purposes is crucial. Consequently, government entities and education policy leaders are shifting their attention to the nation’s teacher training programs as a possible mean to achieve their goals- making children college ready and globally competitive and to help reform the education system (Murphy & Marshall, 2015; Peter, 2013; Lincove, Osborne, Mills …show more content…

This was as a direct result of the teachers complaining that they are not properly equipped to teach to the requirements of the standards required by the Common Core. They highlighted a survey by State Education Agencies (SEA) 2011 and found that from states that adopted the CCSS 45% reported planning with IHE to align academic content or adjust pedagogical content in their teacher preparation program. Three years after that a follow up study showed that 96% had or were planning on aligning their teacher preparation program with CCSS (Murphy & Marshall, 2015). It can therefore be implied that CCSS has caused IHE to adjust or consider adjusting programs offered to teachers to represent the CCSS …show more content…

That is, HEIs need to provide opportunities for teachers to be able to go in the fields and observe how the actual implementation of the CCSS is delivered from an expert. They also need to be exposed to the kind of planning and materials that will lead to the successful implementation of the CCSS. Opportunities to view all these moving parts in one setting is more practicable in order to get teachers in training to respond and demonstrate the skill rather than have then theorize in the classroom or practice on fellow peers (Murphy & Marshall, 2015).
