Chivalry is often spoken as if it is no longer active, but in fact it very well is active. Chivalry is an informal, code of conduct that was developed around 1170 and 1220. Chivalry is associated with a medieval institution of knighthood. Chivalry was popularized in medieval literature, especially the “Matter of Britain” and “Matter of France”. Chivalry was developed in Europe and is derived from the term “chevalerie” which translates to horse soldiery. Many people wonder if chivalry still plays an important factor in today’s society if any. In fact chivalry does still play a role in today’s society. The most important factor is centered on male issues. Medieval literature is responsible for creating our concept of being a “gentleman”. In our everyday life we see how the idea of being a gentleman has quite frankly dissipated. The result? A lot of men focus on incomplete or negative images of what it means to be a man. Chivalry influenced the shape of the basic tenets for European male behavior. In the 1700’s, it was embraced by our forefathers on the Atlantic side, envisioned proper social interaction as an integral part of what America is about. Chivalry has certain ethical standards that foster the development of manhood.
