Zeus has been ruling and keeping control of Mount Olympus for centuries. Now, he is retiring and needs someone worthy enough to take his place as ruler. Someone who is trustworthy but also powerful and intelligent. All these traits depict Hades. Hades is as powerful as Zeus and already has leadership skills from his ruling experience with the Underworld. Hades makes a great replacement for Zeus.
To begin, Hades has great leadership skills and experience. According to Seven Qualities of a Good Leader, “A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction, a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Did you know that Hades is the ruler of the underworld? He is a son of titans Cronus and Rhea. You may know his brothers that are also gods. Zeus who is the god of the skies and Poseidon, god of the seas. Some people may also call him “God of Wealth”.
The underworld has different meanings to it. It’s not just a place for punishment. It is the afterlife for everyone. The underworld is where people go after death. There are different ways to go through it depending on the life that person had lived. They have to sail across different rivers. When they arrive, they are sent to be judged on where they will spend their time in the underworld. If they did not live a good life they will be punished for it. If they lived a good life they go to a place that’s like paradise. Some people who committed serious crimes are sent down right away and they are tortured for all eternity. The underworld cannot always just be a place for those who have not lived the way they should have but also a place for those who did live the life they should live.
In the movie, a number of characters are intentionally portrayed as evil, but to counteract their somewhat intimidating nature, their manner of speaking is informal and sometimes cynical. The character most considered to be the antagonist is Hadês, the god of the underworld. Because the underworld as it is described in Greek mythology can in a way be attributed to the final resting places believed to exist in different religions, the ruler of it is generally seen as evil. He dictates when people die, and handles their souls after death. Because of this, it would be very easy to strike fear into younger viewers of the audience if he was not made less intimidating. As such, his figure and facial features are drawn to look almost innocent, and his dialogue is not presented in a somber tone. He is instead given a voice that makes him sound as if everything is a joke to him, making cynical observations and quipping about events in the movie. He is not the only character that is presented innocently to make him less intimidating. His “servants”, Pain and Panic, are given rather unpleasant names, but are portrayed as clueless and mostly harmless to make their evil intentions seem less important or immoral. When kids are feeling down or they need a little help behaving, principals need to be strict, but reasonable. Hades can be strict and serious, but his reasonable personality keeps him from going over the top. When Hades and his 2 brothers won the war, Hades got tricked and was having to rule the underworld, but instead of fighting for it, he just went with the flow, which shows he’s reasonable. Hades got the “horrible” realm that nobody else wanted “which resulted in becoming lord of the underworld and ruler of the dead”(“Hades”). This shows that although Hades got one of the crudest realms, he didn’t fight for it in any way at all.

It is in The Homeric Hymn to Demeter that one can see that there are constant struggles on Olympus. It seems that the gods are always in some sort of power struggle and one of the largest struggles are between the gods and the goddesses. This power struggle is for control over immortality, and the power to also control life and death. It is when Zeus, “the father of gods and men,” loses his control of life, death, and ultimately immortality to Demeter, that he reassesses his decisions (Harris and Platzner, 55.)
