In the world of business and today’s ever-growing and evolving economy, the definition or role of a manager, may vary depending on the company or institution as well as the business module. However, the basic role of a manager and definition is standardized, irrespective of the entity or structure. According to the Oxford Dictionary; “a manager is a person controlling or administrating a business or part of a business”. In addition, managers also plans, organizes, leads and utilize the resources of the company in order for the organization to achieve its goals, objectives and financial returns, as well as they also act as motivators, advisors and mentors in an effort to increase productivity and efficiency within a business.
The functions
The words function and role tends to be used interchangeably but both words have different meanings especially when it comes to the role of management. Henry Mintzberg has defined the ten main managerial roles of manager as monitor, disseminator, spokesperson, figure head, leader, liaison, entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator. He further categories them into Decisional, Informational and Interpersonal.
Decisional role whereas managers should think creative and comprehensive in creating new ideas to commence new projects in order to have a future existence of the business. If a conflict arises managers must be able resolve it in a friendly and professional manner. It is of great importance that managers have a good crisis management skill to shelter the business in the case, that it is facing intense difficulties.
