Education has always been a very important part of the human life. Since the beginning of humanity, we have thrived on learning things especially figuring out new things such as the universe and the human experience itself. Various different explanations have dominated the human history in trying to educate about the universe and human experience and one of them is Science. It has always tried to question everything and to find an explanation of the unknown. In fact it is the unknown that has intrigued the humanity the most and science has been the leader in trying to provide explanations to these unknowns.
The first question that arises while talking about Science is what exactly is Science? Science can be defined as an effort to understand the nature and how natural world works. It is the systematic observation of natural phenomena. It is about gaining deeper and deeper understanding of the physical world.
Although science is definitely a method of obtaining knowledge, when it comes to explaining the universe and human experience, it has both strengths and weaknesses in comparison to other explanations such as art and religion.
The major strength of science is that it has uncertainty and skepticism. Science never claims to be hundred percent accurate. There is always some degree of ambiguity and probability in science. The Heisenberg’s uncertainty in quantum mechanics is a good example of this. According to the Heisenberg’s uncertainty, we can never be sure of the position of the quantum particles. There are also things like feelings and emotions that science fails to explain. Art can really help express one’s feelings as it captures their mood and style in it. One of the biggest advantages of art is that it can help capture different perspective and give us a better understanding of life. Instead of giving us a universal truth, like science, art can give us wisdom from different experiences.
By looking at the arguments made above and carefully analyzing them, it is easy to say that science, art and religion as all ways of explaining the universe and the human behavior, but they do not necessarily convey the same message. While science may try to give us information to manipulate and understand the physical world, religion and art provide a more emotional and metaphysical understanding of the universe and human behavior.
The overall goal of science is to be able to gain an understanding of the phenomena being studied by conducting different scientific investigations that create knowledge that qualifies one or more of the three levels of understanding.
Science is important because it is the ultimate tool in the progression of humankind. The point that I thought most connected to my path in life was the fact that science is important in medical studies and technology. Science helps us not only improve medical technology but also to become aware of diseases, their causes, and possibly find a cure. Also, science can help us make technology that spots something before it becomes a deadly disease or even prevent it completely in the first place. Now anthropology in basic terms is something that tries to answer one fundamental question- what it is to be human? Of course the answers to that question is infinite and ever changing as we live in an ever changing world made up of many different ways of thinking about that world. But in order to try and think about what it is to be human is you can think about various ways that anthropology may approach the relationship between humans and animals. What’s the difference between humans and animals, being one of the big questions that have concerned philosophy and anthropology throughout the ages.
Science is the knowledge gained by a systematic study, knowledge which then becomes facts or principles. In the systematic study; the first step is observation, the second step hypothesis, the third step experimentation to test the hypothesis, and lastly the conclusion whether or not the hypothesis holds true. These steps have been ingrained into every student of science, as the basic pathway to scientific discovery. This pathway holds not decision as to good or evil intention of the experiment. Though, there are always repercussions of scientific experiments. They range from the most simplistic realizations of the difference between acid and water to the principle that Earth is not the center of the Universe. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein depicts this very difference in the story of Victor Frankenstein. A scientist who through performing his experiments creates a monster which wreaks havoc upon humanity. Frankenstein concentrating wholly upon discovery ignores the consequences of his actions.
We see what people have gone through in their paintings, by looking at every single detail big or small. Every detail that’s in a painting could have a deep meaning to it. The colors give an idea of what the painting could be about, is it exhilarating or depressing? Although it may be surprising, art helps express emotions. “I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim, and now I am overwhelmed with this decent and good feeling.” Kahlo had finally gotten past her desolation. Sometimes art could help you become a stronger person by helping you with personal issues. It’s also a stress reliever for some people it’ll relax them and put them in a good state of mind. If I were to ask you what is art, and how can one find it? What would you say? Well if it were me being asked those question, I would simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design and it could be found all among us. You may define it differently only because art could be defined in many ways. I could simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design. Well according to an article written by Shelley Esaak, an art history expert she mentioned that art has a way of stimulating different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. She also mentioned that art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. [1]
While some people may believe that science and religion differ drastically, science and religion both require reason and faith respectively. Religion uses reason as a way of learning and growing in one’s faith. Science, on the other hand, uses reason to provide facts and explain different hypotheses. Both, though, use reason for evidence as a way of gaining more knowledge about the subject. Although science tends to favor more “natural” views of the world, religion and science fundamentally need reason and faith to obtain more knowledge about their various subjects. In looking at science and religion, the similarities and differences in faith and reason can be seen.
For instance, the simple aspect of the “scientific process,” which is also similar to the scientific method we earlier learned in the first week of lecture, is evidence of how we have matured from earlier and more primitive efforts to differentiate between a real story and a false one. Science tries to analyze phenomena to answer the questions of how, where, what and which giving answers that are logical.
Science is the body of organized knowledge. Science is the collection of ideas and theories and the methodology used by people to prove them. It is the set of methods that people follow in order to explain the things that they see, the things that they perceive and the things that they believe in.
According to Science Made Simple, “Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena”(Science Made Simple, 2013). To me, science is making sense of the world around us through proven facts. Science gives us the ability to work together on both small scales and large to collect data to increase our quality of life. In the thesaurus, a synonym for science is knowledge. Science is all about finding out information about the world and building on that information to discover even more. Without great collaboration and work most natural phenomenons could go unsolved.
In the past, many mysteries were explained through deities and supernatural narratives from sacred texts such as the Bible and the Quran. On the other hand, science seeks to explain everything through the scientific method and natural law.
Science is the observation of natural events and conditions in order to discover facts about them and to formulate laws and principles based on these facts. A primary aim of science is to collect facts (data).
Up until the Enlightenment, mankind lived under the notion that religion, moreover intelligent design, was most likely the only explanation for the existence of life. However, people’s faith in the church’s ideals and teachings began to wither with the emergence of scientific ideas that were daringly presented to the world by great minds including Galileo and Darwin. The actuality that there was more to how and why we exist, besides just having an all-powerful creator, began to interest the curious minds in society. Thus, science began to emerge as an alternative and/or supplement to religion for some. Science provided a more analytical view of the world we see while religion was based more upon human tradition/faith and the more metaphysical world we don’t necessarily see. Today science may come across as having more solid evidence and grounding than religion because of scientific data that provides a seemingly more detailed overview of life’s complexity. “Einstein once said that the only incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible” (Polkinghorne, 62). Yet, we can still use theories and ideas from both, similar to Ian Barbour’s Dialouge and Integration models, to help us formulate an even more thorough concept of the universe using a human and religious perspective in addition to scientific data.

All these doubts could not be answered on their own. Some people had to do research on specific subjects, they had to observe them and after a lot of work on it they had to present the results. They got experience in resolving problems of humanity and so science appeared. Nowadays, science is involved in every aspect of our life, even in subjects that we can not imagine. We can see remarkable examples of scientific achievements in technology and also in society, but they will be analyzed in the next chapters.
