Sandra Bullock plays a very dominant role in both The Proposal and The Blind Side. Her strong female character is great in these movies, to help show the conflict within relationships and family. In Anne Fletcher’s movie The Proposal she tells a story of a New York editor and her assistant. The main character, Sandra Bullock, is a Canadian immigrant who is being deported. Her character, Margret, comes up with an elaborate and supposedly simple scheme in order to keep her job. Margret drags her assistant, Andrew, played by Ryan Reynolds, into the mix as they both try to get what they want, without too much damage. The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, is a film based on a true story. Leigh Anne Tuohy, also played by Sandra Bullock, is a southern, wealthy, white women who was taken on a very unexpected journey when she picks a large black boy, named Michael, played by Quinton Aaron, living on the streets. She invites him into her home with her husband and her two kids. With potential scholarships for Michael to play football in college, Mrs. Tuohy changes her somewhat ordinary life to help this homeless boy have a successful life. In Manohla Dargis’s movie review she said that “She’s always been better in fundamentally independent roles that allow her to grab the wheel.” In The Proposal Margret is a very opinionated business woman focused on herself. Unfortunately her acting and Ryan Reynold’s acting did not seem as realistic as it should have. While their acting in the plot was believable the acting for the movie was less so. In contrast, in The Blind Side, Sandra Bullock, as well as the other actors fit in the roles very well. The southern accents and the strong personalities made for a believable story. It kept me entertained and kept me “choking up, chuckling with warm laughter… and so gratified” as A. O Scott
