Once upon a time there was a girl and a frog. One day, the girl broke her new glasses. The frog mended the pair of glasses with it’s spit, but in turn the girl had to kiss the frog. She did so, and the frog turned into a human. The frog tells the girl to go into the woods with him. The bridegroom followed the frog prince and the 12 princesses follow the frog prince. When the King noticed her daughters were gone the king sent an old soldier to go and look for them. When the soldier finally find the 12 princesses he follows them into the woods. Joy Williams’s Baba Iaga and the Pelican Child and Alexander Afanasev’s The Frog Princess are both critical facets of the fairy tale genre. While initially it may seem that Williams preserved no elements from Afanasev’s tale, upon a closer glance, it is evident that the two tales’ similarities outnumber their differences. By incorporating a generous portion of the original story into his, Williams’s version brings forth an innovative arrangement of classic and new. As a result, William’s tale introduces features to the tale that mirror everyday life lessons while simultaneously maintaining qualities that are reflective of the definitional aspects of the fairy tale genre.

An expectation of how fairy tale stories should be and how typical characters should act is deeply engrained within all of us from childhood. It all begins with classic stories like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Sometimes though there are stories that completely turn around our view of how things should be. The Princess Bride by William Goldman is one of these stories. In it, our normal view of a princesses, heroes, and villains is greatly changed.
The poem “Hazel Tells Laverne” written by Katharyn Howd Machan portrays the originally fairy tale story of the princess and the frog in a drastically different light. The fairy tale itself is very intriguing because there have been many different versions written over the years and the stories have slight differences between them (Heiner). The version that will be used for this analysis of Machan’s poem version will be “The Frog Prince” by Brothers Grimm. Machan’s version of the story is unique in many ways and, the time period she lived in and her gender played a great influence into how she displayed the classic fairy tale to the audience. Even though fairy tales don’t always end the way we want them to, we usually expect them to end with prince charming saving a princess. However, according to the Grimms Brothers version, “The Frog King,” the princess actually saves the prince. An innocent naive princess comes across a frog that once was a prince. Therefore, the only way he can overcome this curse is to ask a princess to fully have her assurance into becoming his companion. The moral of this fairy tale is express how appearances are deceiving. We don’t fully have an understanding what true beauty looks like until it is standing in front of us. The three main symbols that emphasize the true beauty in this fairytale is the frog, the fountain, and the golden ball.
It was not until 2000 that Disney decided to group Mulan, Belle, and the gang together under the brand Disney Princess. Princess merchandise, dolls, clothing, games, home décor, toy has become a $5.5 billion enterprise and Disney’s second-most-profitable franchise, after Mickey Mouse (Suddath).
Advertisements use celebrities and Disney characters to give young girls the idea of being able to imitate their lifestyle. By buying the merchandise of these princesses young girls are buying this mentality and promoting the message. Playboy bunny and Disney princesses are different yet similar in the way that they exploit female bodies. For instance, in the film Mulan her mother and aunts state, “good breeding and a tiny waist will bring honor to them all,” as in her family name (“Disney and Sexism – You-Tube”). This implies that having a tiny waist is more attractive than a usual figure. This leads young girls to believe that the only way their body would be appreciated is if they have the same frame as Mulan. Mulan’s figure seemed average and the females in her family who were helping her get dressed in order to be presentable they used a fabric ribbon lace material to tighten her waist. This extremely emphasized in the movie giving the message that the only way your family will accept you is if you are thin. This Disney princess is over-sexualized because she uses her appearance to attain luxuries. Her family wants her to go on a date against her will in order to marry a man who she does not love. She struggles with her inner self. The producers show that even when a woman is strong she must please others.
One day, the king and queen went on a trip to another kingdom when Caroline was eighteen. On their way to the kingdom their carriage was stopped. The king and queen heard screams and were frightened. Stefan stepped out and said “Stay here, I will come back. Use your magic if necessary.” Stefan looked around and saw blood splattered on the floor. As he turned around to go back to the queen, a figure appeared with veins around his face and sharp teeth, and bit the king on his neck until he sucked him dry of blood. Rebekah heard Stefan scream and ran out of the carriage. She saw her husband being killed and began chanting in Latin until the figure fell to the floor in pain. She ran to Stefan but it was too late, he was dead. The queen sobbed next to her husband, when she was suddenly grabbed by the neck and also sucked on until dry.

In this story, we are presented with a talking fish who grants wishes. Fairy tales teach their audience that bad things can happen to anyone by anyone in a safe environment. That safe environment is constructed through magic. It is comforting to know that in the end the story goes back to the beginning and that things always lead to safety, instead of ending with punishment, or worse. Magic is also a source of comic relief in tales, where heavier topics like murder or in the case of “The Fisherman and His Wife” a war of the sexes and greed are explored. Mainly, fairy tales like this one teach us how to distinguish between right and wrong because the good is always rewarded and the bad is punished. My childhood was just like every other kid growing up in the 20th century. It revolved around the Disney story’s that were filled with magic and dreams. From Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty, my beloved children 's stories seem to stereotype women and be controlled by male characters. At a young age, this showed me that women are not as useful as men are. These stories set the foundation of what it means to be a boy or a girl. The ratio of men to women as main characters was so outstanding it led me to question how these stories affected how I view males and females.
