What Is Intersecting Identity?

For our group presentation, we chose to discuss the topic of intersecting identities and how to implement and discourage a discussion of what intersecting identities are and how they affect society and the American Dream within a high school classroom. To do so, we chose to focus on a couple specific areas and activities. First, we chose to have our students create a sort of bubble diagram, with their name in the center and multiple bubbles stemming off of their name in which they write different identities with which they define themselves. Doing this helps students to understand how there are multiple aspects to who they are which can define them, and certain qualities are not exclusive definitions of their identities. We would subsequently utilize this concept to define the different intersecting aspects of oppression, in efforts to demonstrate the various origins of privilege and how oppression is multi-faceted within society. This next would tie into defining the socialization and Americanization process, which we argue operates as an agent of oppression by stripping individuals of various cultures of their values and the things that define them. We did have a couple days where we had randomly established group work time, but I found that not being able to come to class prepared to work together meant that we did not really have anything ready to be able to get anything done. If we were able to know going into the class period that we would have time to work together, I feel we would have been a lot more efficient in getting things done. Overall, I enjoyed this project and really appreciated my group members and everyone’s willingness to work
