Opening/Attention: Canadians view education as the key to success in life. Often one will assume that anyone can get ahead if they do well in school. Schools and employers encourage young people to stay in school so they can avoid unemployment, receive better jobs and earn a higher education. Employers often look for workers who have higher education skills and technological literacy. Post-secondary education is great for ones credentials but comes at an extremely high cost, which the average citizen struggles to afford. The term “free university” refers to higher education, which neither parents nor students pay. The rapid rise in university numbers means that greater pressure is being put on university resources. Since the government is struggling to maintain public spending, let alone increase spending, there is a danger that university education and research may suffer, causing UK education to lag behind other countries. If universities can charge students, it will help maintain standards, quality of teaching.
b) Makes people value education more. If people have to pay to go to university, a student would value the education more. If higher education is free, it may encourage students to take an easy three years of relaxation.
c) Signalling function of higher education. Arguably, higher education acts as a signal to employers that graduates have greater capacity. As a consequence, people who gain a degree, end up with a relatively higher salary. Therefore, if they financially gain from studying at university, it is perhaps fair they pay part of the cost. Opponents of free post secondary education tend to believe that the establishment of free post secondary education will never happen because it will be too expensive for the federal and state governments to maintain in long-term. A university may not perform as effectively if they have to reduce the tuition cost. Ultimately, the United States should bring forth a free, government subsidized, higher education, because of its benefit to the economy, creation of equal opportunity, and the resolution of the student loan crisis. Even though it will require funding, there are certainly innocuous alternatives that could provide this rather than putting the extra stress on average American taxpayers.
Tuition free colleges should be given because it helps students focus on their studies rather than their jobs. The students will study well and use their time in productive way instead of thinking about their financial situation. There are many ways to define Freedom. To many people, freedom means more than just ‘free to do whatever I want’. Taken literally, that approach to Freedom would produce anarchy and every man, woman, and child would be for him/herself. Now Freedom certainly means that one can have full power to act, speak, or think anyway they would desire to without hindrance or restraint, however this is only true until you abuse your freedoms or infringe upon others free-will or rights.
On the other hand, students that are required to pay for their own education are more likely to apply themselves and do well in their studies, though the extreme costs make it unavailable to many people. In Canada, specifically Alberta, as mentioned in previous lectures, university students pay around 25% of the operating costs of their postsecondary institution. When all is said and done, this still accumulates to a substantial amount of money that puts most of us into debt for many years. However, I think that this requirement holds great value as an incentive to do well in school and become a well-educated citizen. I also think that with the remainder of the funds coming largely from government taxation, it exemplifies not only the value that governments and societies place on education, but also the support that post secondary students can know they are receiving.
Today, it is quite obvious that without the necessary education, a person will not be able to provide himself with proper living conditions and be realized as a person, as well as to realize and protect his rights. High level of education of the population is an important factor that positively affects the creation of favorable conditions for the full realization of human and civil rights and freedoms. That’s why I am really happy, that Canada gives me one of the best education in the world, and with this knowledge I will be able to secure my life.
The many opposers of free college are set on their belief that such an idea would be costly for the government to maintain long-term. They fear that Americans would be forced to have to pay higher taxes to make-up for the cost which may hurt the economy since people would have less to invest or spend. This could be a high point when considering adults who are non-traditional learners and are often faced with challenges when faced with handling finances. Some national statistics point out that community colleges are usually dead-ends for students where only 20 percent of first-time college students attending two-year schools earn associates, certificates or diplomas within a three-year time frame, and that just 15 percent have the intention of furthering their studies for higher degrees (O’Shaughnessy 2011).
