A common question that has become more relevant through the years would be if colleges should be free in the United States. With college education becoming a requirement for high job opportunity by employers, people have become passionate about the topic. The many opposers of free college are set on their belief that such an idea would be costly for the government to maintain long-term. They fear that Americans would be forced to have to pay higher taxes to make-up for the cost which may hurt the economy since people would have less to invest or spend. When compared to other countries who have correlated the idea of free colleges such as Canada, South Korea, and Japan, the opposers feel that free higher education isn’t necessary to build educated workforces and that it would not be enough to contribute to significant improvements for America. This could be a high point when considering adults who are non-traditional learners and are often faced with challenges when faced with handling finances. Some national statistics point out that community colleges are usually dead-ends for students where only 20 percent of first-time college students attending two-year schools earn associates, certificates or diplomas within a three-year time frame, and that just 15 percent have the intention of furthering their studies for higher degrees (O’Shaughnessy 2011). With that stated, making community colleges could have some negative consequences for individuals who are non-traditional students.
