Thomas Jefferson grew up very wealthy with a good education. He became third president of the United States, he wrote the Declaration of Independence, and he accomplished many other things. He is mainly known for the things he did to get independence from Britain. Thomas Jefferson was a very smart man who became very famous from his many achievements. Thomas Jefferson was born at Shadwell in Ablemarle county, Virginia, near what is now known as Charlottesville, on April 13, 1743. His parents were Peter Jefferson, a planter and surveyor, and Jane Randolph Jefferson, who came from a Virginia family. Then in 1800, Thomas ran against John Adams again for third president. A big battle broke out between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republican. Jefferson beat John Adams in the election, but he tied with Aaron Burr. The House of Representatives counted the ballots and they broke the tie. Jefferson had won after 36 ballots. He had become the third president of the United States. Jefferson was sworn into office on March 4, 1801. He was the first president inauguration held in Washington D.C. Instead of riding in a horse-drawn carriage, like tradition, Jefferson walked to the ceremony. During Jefferson’s presidency his biggest achievement was the Louisiana Purchase. The Louisiana Purchase was a purchase of 820,000 square miles of land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. It costed around fifteen million dollars and was doubled the size of the U.S. He also sent Lewis and Clark on their expedition to explore new lands. In 1804, Jefferson ran for reelection against Charles Pickney and won. He also came up with the Embargo Act of 1807 that closed U.S. ports to foreign trades. He was also one of the main people who came up with the first amendment, which lets people worship as they choose. Jefferson did not want to run for a third term as president in 1808. Thomas Jefferson died at the age 83 in his mansion on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Also on the day of his death, John Adams, his presidential election rival, died. Thomas was buried at his mansion, the Monticello. Later, his mansion and 600 slaves, which he inherited from his father and father-in-law, were sold in an auction. In 1954, his mansion became open to the public.
