We as a society reap many benefits living in the information age. These benefits include, but are not limited to the internet, television (TV), cell phones and more. The three devices named are technological properties that enable humans to gather desired information at a fast rate. This form of information can consist of updates on the lives of many individuals, newsfeed, entertainment and etc. However, according to authors Neil Postman and Sherry Turkle, these benefits have detrimental consequences on society. Most nations across the world operate under a capitalistic paradigm, which makes this a foreign and domestic issue. Donald Trump often references “illegal immigrants” coming across the border to steal the jobs of U.S Citizens. However, as a business man he hardly discusses the concept of machines taking jobs off the workforce. Once the culture of the Information Age is analyzed, television, socialized technology, and innovative machines contributes to many of the consequences in this age. Television grants us the ability to be connected with a scheduled set of information and entertainment at the same time. We as a society are able to watch a wide variety of shows that range from news to leisurely programs. According to author Neil Postman, all forms of programming presented by television is focused on entertainment. In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman illustrates this point by stating, “America’s journalists, television newscasters, have not missed the point. Zenyep Tufekci is a techo-sociologist that primarily writes about the impact technology has on society and politics. In her article Failing the Third Machine Age: When Robots Come for Grandma —The Message — Medium, she argues because of capitalistic gain humans are being replaced with machinery. In addition, humans will lose their understanding of machines as they continue to innovate. Tufekci gives an example in her article stating, “Air France 447 crashed over the Atlantic, killing 228, because the pilot forgot how to react to a stall—put the nose down, not up. Something every pilot, and most anyone who’s watcheda few movies, knows.” This example was given to illustrate the point that as the division of labor between machines and humans increases, the human will lack the fundamental practices of the labor aspect. However, its possible that many of these laboring tasks will be replaced with machines as a whole. Tufekci illustrates this point by stating, “Japan is notoriously anti-immigrant, and also hostile to women’s rights in terms of childcare and family-career balance. As a result, more and more Japanese women choose not to have children: hence the shortage of Japanese children to take care of parents.” Japan’s solution was not to change policies on immigration or promote more childcare.
