Waking up every day a person is given so many choices of how to complete so many simple task. With technology in their hands people are given the chance to think and use their brains to make those choices instead they are being influenced by whatever technology they have in their grasp at the time. Technology is supposed to provide an extra help and give a reference for people to refer to when they need in other words insist a person with life choices. What people don’t realize is that this making their brains less useful and the tech companies richer. People never turn off their phones because they are always connected. Because of the Internet and the devices allowing us to use the Internet, the world is easily accessible right under our finger tips (Bradley, 2009). Therefore, people become desensitized to the world around them. Erica Bradley’s article “Technology Is Making Us Lazy”, declares that Americans have no reason to get out and socialize. Social networks, like Facebook or You Tube can keep someone updated with world events and even local events. It has become part of everyday life in which people can’t live without. But what lies beneath is the evil of how addictive technology can be. The above chart demonstrates that almost 60% of students use electronics more than two hours a day. This shows us that technology can be addictive. Jonathan Mandell’s article Are gadgets, and the Internet, actually addictive, recalls a time in April 2007 when BlackBerry users could not send or receive emails for 11 hours because of a glitch in the system. Many people reported this as a natural disaster (Mandell, 2007). People are relying on technology so much, that it is becoming a major problem in our society when it becomes temporary unavailable. Being able to plan your whole day on your smart phone and lock your front door to your house at the same time contributes to society laziness and dependency on technology. On the chart picture below I surveyed fellow ECPI Students on the question does technology make us lazy and or smatter and this was the results. From this pie chart it’s clearly shown that more than half of the students at ECPI agree that technology is making people lazy. ANALYSIS Chris Morris’s “Is technology killing the human touch?” The purpose of this article is to inform that people spend more time on social networks than with family and friends. Is it possible for one to not use their phone constantly? Relying on it for simple math, to take an aesthetic picture of their food, or simply to whine to one's followers about how expensive the latte they just purchased was, phones are always being used and it’s affecting us. “The Veldt” is written by Ray Bradbury and is about a rich family whose children become attached to a room called the nursery which leads them to hurt others. Susan Green writes an article, “Modern technology is changing the way our brains work” that explains the harsh effects of a screen. This connection is relevant now because everyone has a gadget whether it be a phone,computer, or television.
The evolution of technology has had a great impact on our lives, both positive and negative. While it is great to be able to be able to travel faster and research anything with the smartphones that now contain almost every aspect of our daily lives, there are also many advances within the realm of technology. Great deals of people have lost their innate characteristics, case in point the urge to talk to people in public when they need information about something. Copious amounts of people cannot say hi to each other in real life for the sake of feeling strange and prefer to avoid confrontation by saying what they need through their phone. Babies can say hi to us and we will smile, but when adults say hi to each other they look away puzzled. Great amounts of people have lost the image of the old fashioned lifestyle along with the beauty of it. Several don’t admire the free things in life and take for granted the most important things in life. A majority of people cannot look up at the sky instead of their phones and be glad they are alive. The world’s youth is now distracted and trapped by the fascination of how easily they can feel included with society as a result of easy communications with having a cell phone. Kids would rather be on their phones playing games or posting up statuses on their social network for the reason that that’s what society was doing. No body wants to go outside and make friends when they have plenty online. People are not compelled go to the store to buy things anymore; they can just purchase it on their phone and have it delivered in a short amount of time. I’m not sure if people are choosing to ignore or if they are absolutely now blind to the fact that these actions are harming our future. I cannot deny that cell phones have given us extra privileges, but we should not rely on them to make us further human. I myself access social networks through my phone but I haven’t forgotten that when my phone dies, my life still continues. People forget that they have a life outside of their mobile device. Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
Albert Einstein quoted, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” The use of technology today is affecting our future generations by introducing them fast into using technology. Children today are focusing more on Ipads, Ipods, smart phones, or other electronic devices, rather than focusing on their knowledge. In addition, people who have internet disorder suffer from this condition. The over-use of technology is creating an impatient society and it is also diminishing once-valued personal interaction with others. More often now days, people would rather let a machine take a message instead of answering a call; missing the opportunity to have a personal conversation. Many of us would rather have the instant gratification of watching a movie instead of reading a book or sending a text or instant message instead of meeting with a friend for coffee and conversation. Therefore, society is becoming increasingly impatient and impersonal with interactions. Those types of behaviors create lonliness in our lives despite our “constant connection” with others through things like cell phones and Facebook®. Technology has make our life more productive in many different ways. One of the greatest invention is Apple’s products. It leads an evolution of tablet devices. IPad or IPhone can act as a textbook, laptop, navigation, camera, notebook, gaming devices and more. It combines all the other devices into one which allows to manage our time effectively. “This is not a simple proposition, since our devices have become more closely coupled to our sense of our bodies and increasingly feel like extension of our minds” said Sherry Turkle. They are becoming part of ourselves. Perhaps some people are saying technology causes laziness because we are relying more on a devices instead of doing stuff by our self, but technology are intended to make our lives easier. We are still doing the same thing but in a more effectively way. Human race are moving on, we cannot stay in an era where people are still using paper map to find out the way, sending letter through the post office.
