After becoming independent and successfully framing the constitution, Americans set embarked on developing the nation. These early efforts were steered by her first President George Washington. During his tenure between 1789 and 1797, Washington established a National Bank for Americans, Introduced a common monetary system, improved the country’s financial status and began plans to clear the US’s public debt. Gerald Linderman argues that “In the late 18th century and beginning of 19th century, United States’ economic development was lagging far much behind European countries like Britain.” (Linderman). In 1961, Abraham Lincoln led the Republicans to become the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln was indeed people’s choice for presidency. Despite coming from a poor family, he believed in hard work and strived in his academics to become a lawyer as well as excel in his political activities, (Hernon 3590). Lincoln was a kind person, honest, tactful, charming and able to win in challenging political debates.
The immediate events that preceded the Civil War between the North and the South was both the Kansas conflict and John Brown’s raid in Virginia. Brown was against slavery and he stood firm against it by all means possible. In Kansas, Brown fought against it and even established and slaves uprising in Virginia. In October 1859, Brown teamed with 22 brave slave men to capture an army arsenal that was a store of approximately 100,000 guns. However their move was neither mature nor garnered support as per their expectation. As a result, Brown landed himself in trouble, being captured and executed.

Both the Homestead Acts and acting of setting slave free from both may 20 and September 22 in 1862 respectively had crucial meanings. The first Act granted Americans who did not take part in the war a $10 percent homestead which was equivalent to 160 acres of land. This fueled Americans to push for achieving victory over the South so that they can be entitled to free selling of the West.
The second and the last law declared slaves free from January 1, 1863. Although Confederation had own laws, it became clear for slaves that they had no otherwise but to support the Northerners. Despite the terror unleashed by the slaveholders, the Confederacy lost lasting rear, and many blacks went to the side of northerners to serve in the federal army.
To sum up, the American civil war was very short, lasting only 1861 to 1865. Despite this short time, it remains one of the deadliest wars ever witnessed in United States.
