The economic and industrial delays of the South, in comparison to the Northern states, led to hardships and struggles that hindered the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In the 1800's leading up to the American Civil War the economies of the North and the South expanded and flourished under different industries, solidifying the divide between the two regions. Southern agriculture relied heavily on the expansion of plantations and slavery, which limited the development and growth of cities and urban life. As the growth of plantations and agriculture continued the southern states became more reliant on the industrial goods produced by the factories and mills of the north. As the war began to unfold the Union army held a distinct advantage of possessing sixty percent of the countries population. Even with the distinct advantage of a larger population the Union army was less prepared for the war then the Confederates. The Confederate army prepared from the beginning for a prolonged war, signing 100,000 troops up for several years of service in comparison to the Union signing up just 75,000 troops for several months. As the war continued the both sides of the war were ravaged by injury and disease, the later amounting to three times the amount deaths then deaths caused directly by the war. As the death tolls increased for both sides the amount of men able to fight for the Confederate army drastically decreased as the war continued. Union armies saw the opportunities and took measures to increase the number of troops by allowing African Americans to enlist. On January 1st 1863, President Lincoln declared the emancipation of slaves in Union occupied states and invited them to fight for the Union army. The emancipation gave the North many advantages but some Union troops did not welcome the news.
