The American colonies chose to declare independence from Great Britain for many reasons. They believed the British were treating the colonists unfairly. The British passed many tax laws that impacted the colonists. The colonists had no representatives in Parliament to vote on or discuss these laws. In English government, the people had to have representatives who could vote on taxes that would affect them. The colonists had no such voice in British government. Thus, they believed these taxes were unfair and illegal. The colonists also felt the British were limiting what the colonists could do. The colonists were in every right, aspect and mind, not only justified but also it was about time that they stood of and actually take action against the British. Britain turned to the colonies to pay off their debts by taxing them. The taxes angered the colonists because they believed it violated their rights. Benjamin Franklin had initially proposed the Albany plan of Union to unite the colonies, however this law was rejected by all of the colonial governments. It wasn't until after all of the British laws and taxes that the colonies would unite and write the Declaration of Independence.
With all this shoving against the colonists, provoking them rebel they ended up doing so in 1776. For the taxation, military actions, and acts against their beliefs and government philosophies had went too far for the colonists. Also they were scared that if they stayed it would have gotten worse for them so leaving was seen as their only option.
