A Welding Career Could Be A Good Fit I have researched welding as a career and the time it requires to receive your certification is less than a four year college degree. The cost for the training is also significantly more affordable than a four year college degree and there is opportunity to earn an above average wage enabling you to live a comfortable lifestyle . Welding looks like a good starting point for me. Even though I’m still not exactly sure what career I want to do, welding is something I enjoy, and I can see myself doing this to support myself. Some of the jobs you can do in welding can have harsh conditions but the work can be fun like pipeline welding.( Pipeline welders perform their job in a variety of work environments. With a few exceptions, pipeline welding is an outdoor activity. Pipes have to be repaired regardless of the weather, so this means working conditions can vary from sunny and pleasant to cold and snowy, depending on location and season.) This would be a good fit for me because I think I could handle the job and the different weather conditions would make it a fun experience. If you want to be a welder, and actually have a career, you can go to a welding school and learn how to weld, or you can try to be a welders helper and just learn the trade. WATC.edu states, that they offer a welding program. WATC is located in Wichita Kansas. Their welding program allows students to gain knowledge and skills in cutting, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and provides some exposure to oxy-acetylene cutting and welding (WATC.edu). In addition, the length and cost of the training is an important consideration. WATC.edu shares, that there are 5 different degree and certificate options. The one I would be interested in is the Welding Technical Certificate option. This one would be a total of 46 credit hours and would cost a total of $10,524. Finally, this job requires certain traits, talents and interests. The Occupational Handbook adds, that welders often must work in awkward positions using tools, so they need to be able to put up with that. A lot of times, overtime will be present. So you would have to be available for overtime if needed. Welders are required to lift heavy objects sometimes. So a welder should be fairly strong (The OCO). Entitled. I'm not entitled to anything, but I believe I am entitled to this scholarship. I am not going directly into agriculture, I am going to Ferris state university, where I will be in the welding program. I have been in 4-H clubs since i was eight years old along with other sports and afterschool activities. I have been preparing for this since I was a little kid, following my fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers steps and continuing the family farm has been a lifelong dream. My father is a side job welder and full time farmer. Because of my family's low income with farming, I am one hundred percent on my own for college.

In my opinion pipe welding can be an extremely discomforting occupation, because they normally spend long periods of time away from families; often several months at a time. One big factor that plays a role on this key point is the different fumes that can be inhaled. Between a combination of welding fumes such as argon, carbon, tungsten, and when welding stainless steel I may also have to worry about chromium. All of these different fumes can cause many health problems later down the road such as lung problems (AFSCME). We have been living in a generation with retired welders in their 50’s and 60’s who have an extremely high increase in medical problems due to their careers as welders (BOC). “Sometimes one may receive specific warnings after breathing or inhaling different fumes. For instance if enough zinc fumes are inhaled expect to experience metal fume fever; symptoms may include night sweats, chills, and stomach pains”
I choose welding as a main career choice because growing up I have always played with fire and have always loved melting things down. At first I wanted to be a fireman but they put fire out so once I saw that welders melt stuff down I chose that. My momma always told me to choose that as a career since I stayed playing with fire. The recruiter told me Tig welding would be the best choice for me, but I don’t know if I’m sure on that.

There is some basic equipment that is needed while welding. First and foremost, a welding mask is needed to protect the eyes from the extremely bright light created by the arc. UV light can also come from arcs, so eye protection is needed for this as well. Another necessary piece of safety equipment is gloves. A thick protective specially designed welding glove is used for the hand that is holding the torch, and a thinner glove is optional for the hand that isn’t on the torch as well. Heavy cotton clothing, especially long sleeves and jeans, is necessary as well. The long sleeves and pants will protect the skin from the extremely hot spatter than can fly off everywhere when welding. Leather is preferred if doing a lot of welding at one time.
