Many countries in the developing world faces critical problem with regard to waste management. Waste refers to household solid waste and is defined as ‘any materials that currently have a negative value to their owner and are to be disposed of’ (Wray, 2000). Waste management is defined as the process of dealing with or controlling solid waste. Failure to adequately address the problem of waste management leads to escalating environmental and health problems.
Solid Waste Management is defined as the management of waste generated from various sources. Stages involved in waste management include waste generation, segregation, storage, collection, transportation, processing and final disposal. Solid Waste Management is one of the three major environmental problems faced by Urban Local Bodies.
• Waste generation refers to the production of waste.
• Waste handling covers the way of dealing with the waste after generation and prior to final disposal.
• Waste storage refers to the action of accumulating and piling of waste before disposal.
• Waste collection and transportation refers to the way of removing the waste from the household by the municipality waste collection services or own private collection.
• Waste final disposal refers to the methods used by the households to get rid of their wastes, such as burning, burying, landfill and others.
People’s perception towards Solid Waste Management
It is believed that studying and knowing the perception and attitudes of the people may help to understand and to address the waste management issue in a manner that will be beneficial economically, environmentally, socially and health wise.

To conduct the surveys, demonstration/study areas will be chosen as representatives of each residential type. Information regarding these study areas such as density, population, built un-built ratio will be gathered.
For the collection of data for basic study regarding concepts of waste & waste management, details of waste and waste management in the world, developing and developed countries and in India will be done by literature study. The survey will be done in the selected areas through questionnaires regarding peoples’ attitude, methods and strategies towards waste management. Further the relationship between peoples’ attitudes, residential types and waste management will be analyzed and the manner in which it has changed through the time in the city of Ahmedabad.
