79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
When in the course of life events, their comes a time in a student’s life where he/she can no longer manage all their homework assignments given to them by their teacher. As a student gets older they begin to have a harder time in concentrating in their school needs. This becomes worse if one is involved in any academic or athletic programs after or before school.
Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. With a job, a sport, or after-school activities, it restricts the student even more. The negotiation of arranging later school times, leads to safer, and better academic performances. Our society needs a reality check because quite frankly 24 hours in a day is not enough. Teachers assign questions for say 1 to 5 and one thinks to themselves, “ Oh that’s not too bad” until they flip through the textbook only to find each sections goes from A-Z. Picture this a typical, hard-working student. Each day one receives multiple assignments to complete for homework. The student is involved in several extracurricular activities so they doesn’t have much extra time. After sport practice, they head home, bury their head in books, and begins to study.
The most common word for students in high school: homework. Overwhelmed every day by loads of homework given to them by their 6 teachers, some 7 teachers. Teenagers at the high school level see this more than at the junior high level. Bombarded by homework day after day, no time to do anything else. Homework leaves students with less sleep, fewer things to do, and takes time away from their family.
All students recognize this brand of homework; homework that doesn’t teach the material and is completed only for the sake of being completed. The infamous term “busywork” comes to mind. Teachers in high schools dole out paper after paper of unnecessary busywork, which is frustratingly tedious and incredibly time-consuming. Copying sentences word for word from a long-winded textbook, completing redundant activities that reiterate again and again the same skill, rushing through mandatory study guide after mandatory study guide, that is a true curse. I know this from painful experience.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. No study has ever demonstrated any academic achievement linked to assigning homework. There is also no support to the fact that homework provides nonacademic benefits at any age. Here are a few examples: building character, promoting self-discipline, or teaching good work habits. All teachers who assign homework want to believe that the gain outweighs the pain. Although, there is no evidence of that and they must rely on faith (“Homework: No Proven Benefits”, pg. 1). Michellea, a mother of a middle school student, says that some work can reinforce certain skills, but hours of homework are unhealthy and unproductive. Mominseattle agrees. She contemplates that such a heavy load can result in potential drawbacks to the students. Hours of homework a night plus a full day of school can be just as much work as an adult at a full-time job. She believes students should enjoy their childhood, as short as it already is. MagnetMom complains about how her daughter’s homework takes away her beneficial sleep.
