WORMS LICE & SCABIES, GROSSEST HEALTH ISSUES Worms, lice and scabies are listed as infestation caused by large parasites which attack human body for food, shelter and reproduction. Poor hygiene and overcrowding are main causes for the infection. The best way to prevent parasitic infestation is taking care of body hygiene, precaution while consuming food and proper toileting procedures. Treatment consists of treating the affected individual and his or her family members who share the house hold. Let us now see each one of these grossest health issues separately. Worm infestation. There are many kinds of worms such as pin worm, tape worm, dog worm, hook worm and cat worm. These are parasites which need a human host to fulfill their life cycle partially or completely. How does it spread? Worm infestation spreads easily by many ways. It can either spread from one person to other directly; in others the eggs undergo some kind of maturity before it affects the host. In some the parasite spends a part of its life cycle in the soil before it becomes infective to the host. It mostly spreads by fecal contamination of food. What happens when the egg, larvae or the worm enters the host? It enters the host either by oral route or through the skin, on entering the host the eggs hatch out into larvae and migrates to various parts of the human body and produce the signs and symptoms. How common is the infestation? Even though it is an international health issue it affects the tropical countries more than other countries. More than a billion people world-wide are affected by worm infestation. It has no racial, gender predilection. It affects all races and genders equally. Pinworm affects children more than the adults. The larvae molt and become nymphs which molt again before becoming adult How is it treated? There are special lotions which only doctor can prescribe. It is applied below the neck after a bath and left for a night and the next day it is washed of in the shower. Usual treatment is once a week application for two weeks. These lotions have toxic chemicals Primethirin and Malathion and so the instructions given should be followed meticulously. It should not be applied in the face, mouth and eyes. Even after the treatment the symptoms may go on for a month until the allergic reaction subsides. How to prevent these gross health issues? Practicing good hygiene, taking shower daily, not using personal items belonging to others and seeking doctors’ advice as soon as symptoms arise.
