People often ask me that why I am working as a volunteer and not doing a job? I always say that volunteering gives me peace of mind. Volunteering does not give me money, but it taught me a lot in a very short period. I have always urge to help people in need and as a full-time nursing student I am not able to work right now. Though I wanted to know more about the hospital environment. I chose to work in a hospital as a volunteer mainly to see if this place is really for me. Currently, at the breast center my duties are to take the patients inside the changing room, provide them robe and pants and let them know about lockers and waiting area. The patient needs to wear her gown or pants according to her required diagnose. For instance, if the patient is there to check bone density she needs to wear pants and if she is there to check breast cancer or lump, she needs to wear robe. I love to take patients in and teach or explain them about lockers and waiting area. They often ask me question like what time it will take me? or how to make coffee? or how to use the locker? I always try my best to help the patients and comfort them. Now I also feel that this is the area I really want to work in future. My position is very diverse at the MHH. For example, once the manager of that area gave me the duty to count the coffee and supplies and to check expiration dates. Later she was happy with my work. I also decorated whole floor with the Halloween stuff. Everyone appreciated me so much that appreciation made my day.
Overall, I learned many things at the MHH. I love to be a volunteer. Although I do not get paid or anything I still love to go there ever week unless there is some emergency. I try my best to serve patients and the staff without expecting money because their appreciation is everything for me. I enjoyed a lot working in different areas in the hospital.
