The museum I chose to visit this week was the North Carolina Museum of History located in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 13, 2014. It was a good time for this assignment because we were traveling this week to North Carolina so it made a great stop for us during our stay. Taking World Cultures has given me a new perspective on the foundation of our history and heritage. North Carolina holds a large amount of history for the United States. It was one of the original 13 colonies and was the first state to declare its independence from the British. North Carolina was known for its slave planation system to cultivate tobacco and cotton to be exported. This museum is the largest exhibit ever produced at the N.C. Museum of History. This exhibit is one that would inspire anyone new or visiting the state to experience the history of North Carolina and to develop more of an appreciation and understanding of the culture and communities.
One of the first exhibits visited was The Story of North Carolina: An Indian House that covered the history of the American Indians. It was learned that almost 400 years ago the English settled on Roanoke Island and found many Native American living on the coast. These Native Americans spoke three language groups, the Siouan, Iroquoian, and Algonquian. The Indians did not have a writing system, so many of their stories were told on oral traditions. The museum displayed the home of typical American Indian Piedmont Siouan tepee. We got to go inside this home, and watch a short video about the history of the Indians founded in North Carolina. This exhibit aims to remind us that every day we live on a foundation built by those who preceded us and that at present we are leaving our own legacy for future generations. Stageville was home to Paul Cameron, the wealthiest man in North Carolina, and to the approximately 900 enslaved people he owned. Today, the historic site consists of 165 acres with numerous original buildings. It was amazing to me to learn how people lived back then and what was thought to be a normal way of life. Today, we still struggle with individuals who judge people by their culture, race, religion, or sexuality however, it is much better today than it was back then. It is amazing to look at the pictures of the structures that the enslaved people built with their own hands and the time and effort that it took them to accomplish these things. It is amazing because back then these individuals were judged and not praised as they should have been for their hard work. I like to think that from then to now the world is a better place and we do not support slavery or accept it in any
