A Vision Achieved
Jefferson envisioned a government that allowed its citizens to exercise inalienable rights. In exact words, he states, “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” To be more evident, how can we define these “inalienable rights” of “life”, “liberty”, and the “pursuit of happiness?” Have these inalienable rights, achieved Jefferson’s goal? I am convinced, Jefferson’s revolutionary vision of life, liberty, and happiness has at last been achieved in
America.
Life is a precious gift given to us the moment we are born and Thomas Jefferson knew this. We can define life as having respect for ourselves and others, accepting our individuality, not judging certain groups or individuals, and being able to exercise our morals and beliefs. Thomas Jefferson is most closely associated with deism than any other of America’s founders. The rise of deism began during a season of new discoveries, inventions, and beliefs that challenged the social norm. Deism was influenced by the enlightenment period and was a rational, law-governed faith that believed in a world created by a “watchmaker” (Onuf). Thomas Jefferson was so involved in deism that he even created his own Bible. Deism was its strongest during the mid-seventeenth centuries through the mid-nineteenth centuries, but there are still some Deists today. For the past eleven years, opponents from the left and right side of the political spectrum have lambasted the FairTax. Politicians who don’t want to relinquish the power given them by the current tax system are the proposal’s biggest opposition. They don’t want to give up the withholding system. They don’t want to give up the sixteenth amendment. They don’t want to lower taxes. They oppose the FairTax for the sake of their own greed and agendas. Despite all their baseless criticism, the FairTax is continuing to gain support on the grass roots and political levels. The statistical data and scientific analysis, compiled over the last eleven years, is overwhelming proof of the FairTax’s ability to bring transparency to the tax system, broaden the tax base and to fix the U.S. economy.
The United States tax system is in complete disarray. Republicans and Democrats agree that the current tax code is complex, unfair, and costly. The income tax system is so complex; the IRS publishes 480 tax forms and 280 forms to explain the 480 forms (Armey 1). The main reason the tax system is so complex is because of the special preferences such as deductions and tax credits. Complexity in the current tax system forces Americans to spend 5.4 billion hours complying with the tax code, which is more time than it takes to manufacture every car, truck and van produced in the United States (Armey 1). Time is not the only thing that is lost with the current tax system; Americans also lose great deal of money complying with the tax code. Resources that are currently wasted on record keeping, filing forms, learning the tax code, litigation, and tax avoidance. The cost of complying with the current tax code totals about $200 billion annually, or $700 for every man, woman, and child in America (Armey 1). The overwhelming consensus that the current tax system is inadequate has ignited the search for tax reform. There are numerous proposals for tax reform; one particular proposal brought forth by various conservatives is the idea of national flat rate income tax. The idea is to replace the current income tax with a single rate that everyone pays.
Not having a state income tax has many political implications. Many people claim not having a state income tax means their is no state government in the people's business this appeals to people with conservative values. People with these types of values lean toward Republicans, they like small government control over their money. While others end up keeping more of their money, they still are not able to afford the increasing average cost of living. Taxes are one of the most controversial, yet important factors that contribute to a successful and stable government. Taxes are defined as, "a contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income or profits or they are added to the costs of goods and services." These taxes help fund many government operations and they truly keep our country and government running. Taxes are often opposed and many people just don't see the need for them.
