The Truth of The Night
Vincent Van Gogh wrote to his brother, "This morning, I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big," describing his inspiration for the Starry Night, the beauty of the night.
The first aspect of the painting that grabs my attention is the sky. It is magnificently wild, with the main spiral stroke followed by a wavy pattern, combined with the blazing light of the stars and the crescent moon that resembles a guardian angel. Also, the blend of colors and the contrast between them add to the sky's beauty.
Next, I find myself staring at the city. It appears to be submerged in a darkness that is both menacing and terrifying. There are a few

For instance, I noticed the roaring mountains in the background, forming a stunning horizon. Additionally, there is a mysterious, humongous tree, found near the bottom left. What purpose does this tree serve? I believe it is there to add a whole new element to the painting or represent Van Gogh in some way.
The painting itself conveys many feelings and emotions. For example, the darkness of the city creates a sense of discomfort but is slightly counteracted by the peace, that the brightly lit windows bring upon. I feel a powerful sense of calmness coming from the luminous sky. The sparkling stars with the godly moon builds relief within me. That is why when I gaze at the painting, all the stress built up in me, suddenly vanishes and becomes replaced by comfort.
In an Artble article about the Starry Night, it mentioned how the silence of the night can almost be felt. Even Van Gogh even stated, "I should not be surprised if you liked the Starry Night and the Ploughed Fields, there is a greater quiet about them than in the other canvases" to his brother in a letter. The word, "quiet," indicates how even Van Gogh felt calm about the painting. Even the mighty rage will fall onto its knees when it faces the calmness of the Starry

Vincent Van Gogh’s famous art work was the Starry Night. The colour of blue was known to be an emotional blue of from his perspective however to this day it is known as one of the most beautiful pieces due to that fact of the attention put in to each colour and the amount of detail of layers used to create a certain aspect of emotion.
“This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” wrote van Gogh to his brother Theo. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.
The painting express creative drive that they give form to immaterial ideas and feelings (this is relevant to abstract art). Since the author had mental health issues during the creative process of the painting I believe, he didn’t just used art and beauty themes to express his paintings, he wanted to show the world what he was feeling inside. Although, many people can view this painting’s major theme as Art and Beauty, I also viewed it as Art and Spiritual Belief. The reason why is because according to Sayre, Gogh wrote a letter to his brother by saying: “My paintings are almost a cry of anguish.” Gogh utilized a variety of colors on the spectrum, giving his paintings life. He often used the art style of Impressionists in that his paintings are depicted as he sees fit, and not how they are naturally viewed. His heavy brushstrokes and vivid colors portray the night sky as crazy and chaotic and the village below as peaceful and
“The Starry Night” by Anne Sexton describes her experience of visiting Van Gogh’s painting during a gallery showing. Anne Sexton’s Poem “The Starry Night” is written in reference to Vincent Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night sent to his brother. She writes this poem with a heavy hearted tone, and the understanding of Van Gogh’s work to be a destructive painting, full of darkness and longing for death to come. Sexton views the town at the foot of the hills as decaying and silent as it slowly disappear below the starry night. More importantly Sexton sees the tree that looks like the hair of dead woman drifting in the blue sky which is like a serpent that is sly and deceitful. Like the understanding of the evil of the sea in the times of the ancient near east, she saw the swirling sky similarly. Through this she then sees the night like a beast that brings chaos and destruct, removing all that is beautiful. For she says the even the eleven starts, so beautiful with the moon will be swallowing up by the beast of the night. She writes as if all of this was once beautiful and a source of life to this earth, however is now destroyed, and source of longing for the destruction of life.
many other emotions that the artist is trying to display in his painting. Although we can try and
This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.
that includes a village, a tree, mountains, and the night sky. Keep in mind that Van Gogh was in
The paining ‘Starry night’ was made when Van Gogh was in a mental asylum after he had an episode that resulted in him cutting of his own ear. The painting depicts the view from his asylum room, which Bennett could incorporate into his feeling of being trapped in a society that doesn’t accept him.
Van Gogh had sympathy for the peasants and furthered his passion for humanity. He studied them non-stop to explore their world. The color palette he chose was dark and crudely painted on, almost grungy. It’s a low-lit kitchen area, with the look and feel of exhaustion that the dark color palette engages the viewer to feel what is going on.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.
Vincent Van Gogh’s piece titled Starry Night, represents the artist’s insanity and isolation from the outside world. Van Gogh painted the view that was seen from the room, mixed with the emotions he felt inside. Starry Night is an oil painting on canvas and is two dimensional. The painting is found in the Museum of Modern Art located in New York. The variety of elements and principles of art, help to bring the painting to life, and help viewers understand what the art could represent.
Although these paintings are landscapes, their themes are quite different. Van Gogh’s starry night is a more peaceful quiet depiction of the town below. View of Toledo is a more ominous painting that depicts a town below an angry stormy
... time passes and the observer looks deeper into the piece, several feelings or emotions may arouse. Some feelings such as warmth, comfort, anger, hostility, calmness, sadness, and indifference can spring from just seeing certain colors in an image. The overall effect created by the artist could vary from person to person; however, it can be seen how a painting can psychologically affect people.
Vincent Van Gogh’s style is defined by the profuse brush strokes that you see in all his paintings. These brush strokes highlight the primary subject of a majority of his paintings which is nature. The texture in Starry Night over the Rhone is what gives the artwork an organic feeling. Vincent Van Gogh did an excellent job with handling the medium. Since the medium is canvas, it’s very heavily woven and compact. He does a superb job with utilizing thick brush strokes that allow the artwork to really stand out. The surface is not smooth, but rather textured like a light-sand paper. The texture is already rough due to the canvas medium; however these heavy brush strokes define the texture even more, making the piece of art really co...
