Communication is more than just one person speaking and another listening. There are 3 components, them being Verbal, Non-verbal and Body language. In this essay I am going to explain briefly what I understand about them.
Communication is an exchange of information from one individual or group to another, whether in speech or through another medium. (Giddens 1997).
Verbal is the smallest part of communication, yet it is the first example that people give of communicating.
The more we understand about science and technology, the more we can develop and create modern forms of communication such as PCs, Radio and TV. These electronic messages are often called mass communication. They can be spoken, written and broadcasted. (Maletzke.G 1972) suggests that in this mass communication, messages are sent publicly, indirectly, only in one direction and to a wide audience. He says this because the information is not directed towards individual people, and theoretically nearly everyone has access to it. Verbal communication sent through electronic media can be picked up by anyone, even those who don't speak the same language that the message is sent in.
An argument to this thought of Maletzke's is that mass communication is a two way process. In that indirect messages sent to many individuals, results in direct communication between all the people receiving the information.
Verbal communication is hard to keep exact records of, but the Written side gives us the capacity of keeping records. This information is very important when dealing with people's lives, so that there is evidence of what is said and seen between people. (Key, Mary Richtie 1980) says that without the Written side of Verbal communication it would limit our cultural developments immensely.
Communication messages that are sent verbally are strongly influenced by a number of non-verbal factors, which include facial expression, visual context, gestures, posture and Para Verbal, such as pitch, tempo and loudness. (Crutlenden 1986) says that areas of communication such as, gestures and Para Verbal can work together to let you know how a person really feels. An example is a high pitch voice, lifted eyebrows and hand movements, can indicate an increase in tension, and falling tones and lowering gestures mark a decrease in tension, the low tones could also indicate somebody who is depressed or upset. It is very important to watch as well as listen to the person or people you are talking to.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Communication is key. The study of communication is far more complex and deeper than just the function of conversation. Communication takes many forms varying from spoken and written words, to the commonly overlooked nonverbal cues. In life, every person will communicate differently. Effective leaders, however, must learn to perfect these different forms of communication and be able to apply them in the appropriate situations. The success of a leader is reliant on their ability to communicate as a whole. The intent and concentration of this paper is to show how the importance of nonverbal communication affects the credibility and success of a leader.
THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE -Marshall McLuhan Since the beginning of communication, mankind has been detained by the methodology it uses to convey, sustain and recognize data through different forms. As indicated by McLuhan's article, the "media" which is the most recent betterment and progressed innovative type of communication, has a social and mental impact on human species.
Nonverbal communication is rich in meaning. Everyone communicates through nonverbal gestures and motions. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. Watching two people interacting, I figured that they are really close by their space communication, eye language, and body movements.
When people talk to each other for the purpose to exchange information each person is using verbal and
Verbal communication is when a sender communicates by speaking. However there are some pros and cons towards using verbal communication. For example, when someone uses verbal communications they can understand what message they are trying to send without any explanation however, some people have different ways of saying things especially people from different cultures because they have different accents and dialects.
“Communication is defined as the giving or exchanging of information through oral, written or non-verbal means” (Blais & Hayes 2016), and
Communication is the sharing of information between two or more persons or groups to reach a common understanding. In the communication, the information or ideas conveyed must be understood. Effective communication allows participants to properly exchange ideas. Communication is the two way process of exchanging information. Communication can be done through oral, verbal and written communication. Information is transmitted as words, tone of voice, and gestures and postures. Information can be shared face to face or by telephone, fax, e-mail, text messaging, videoconferencing, electronic-portfolios, chat, memos, letters, reports, etc. The number and types of methods increase as information technology systems become ever more involving a great deal of worldly experience and knowledge.
I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. I never knew until reading this chapter that we do these things all most every time we communicate. These are things I took for granted until now. I now know that I will pay
There are different types of communication (verbal, nonverbal, paralinguistic). Verbal communication is communicating with words. For instance, an individual speaks to another at a business meeting regarding profit margins. Second, nonverbal communication is communicating without the use of words but through gesture, body language, facial expression and eye contact (Baron, Branscombe, Byrne). Also these physical expressions can provide powerful and valuable information about others’ current feelings and reactions without the need of words. Lastly paralinguistic is defined as the use of emotional expression, gestures, and the location of the body in relation to the other's body, eye contact, and level of voice instead of verbally expressing these cues (Triandis). Additionally, paralinguistic is also known as paralanguage as a way to modify or nuance meaning, or convey emotion, with the use of pitch, volume, and intonation (Triandis). For instance, as described by Triandis’ article Culture and Communication, “in Bulgaria and south India a nod means "no,” and a shake of the head, means "yes".” It’s interesting how Triandis describes the amount of difficulty it was to compre...
Understanding Mass Communication identifies the next channel in the development of mass communication, the telegraphy in 1840:
Mass communication is to use a source or medium to reach a large audience to communicate your message. People are communicating with each other since the evaluation of human, and with the passage of time it become more and more advance. After the emergence of media and development of new technologies, it gave birth to different media theories and these theories showed a transformation over the last two decades. Mass media communication theories divides in four following eras:
In today's world people cannot live without Mass Media and with the help of technological improvements to send messages to the masses is becoming easier and easier. As we are been shower with tons of advertising, information and other sort of materials by the different types of Mass Media has influence in our everyday life styles.
Communication is essential to human life. Every aspect of our daily lives is affected by our communication with others. It can be different types such as verbal, nonverbal and written communication. It is indeed a complex process filled with countless elements, all of which play an important role. The process of communication between human beings has been studied and analyzed outwardly since the beginning of time. The term itself cannot be defined in only one particular way because communication exists in a certain context and is dependable on the communicator and the audience. Example of describing communication is as “the transmission of information, ideas, attitudes or emotions from one person or group to another (or others) primarily through symbols” and “social interaction through messages” (McQuail, 1993). Furthermore, Watson and Hill describe the process of communication as “one which begins when a message is thought up by a sender, who then encodes the message before transmitting it through a particular channel to a receiver, who in turn decodes the message with a certain effect as an outcome” (Price, 1998).The complexity of the whole process is seen through the use of verbal and nonverbal communication on a daily basis, as well as the ability to interact with other human beings on multiple levels, mentally and emotionally. We begin communicating the moment we come out of the womb and do not stop communicating until death. This essay will try to compare and contrast two different communication contexts- interpersonal and mass communication, by using relevant communication models.
The term communication is freely used by everyone in modern society, including members of the general public, scholars and management practitioners. Communication is defined as the interaction, giving and taking of information, sending and receiving of messages through verbal and non verbal means.
