Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a process, a clinical master tool, so to speak, used by the nurse who is focused on positive outcomes in patient care. Registered Nurses (RNs), that assume a leadership role, continuously assess their practice in order to find out what is working and what is lacking or in need of more information (Barry, 2014). The RN who uses EBP strives to prevent healthcare errors, critically thinking through processes and anticipating obstacles, methodically drawing upon clinical research and expertise, including their own knowledge and drawing upon the individual patient experience toward improving safety and quality care (Barry, 2014). It has been extended to a wide range of clients (Park & Huber, 2009). Therapists should use mostly evidence based treatments unless the client is participating in a study or the treatment has been reasonably determined as the client’s last resort. With treatment a client becomes emotionally and financially invested. The client’s time and money should be valued. Insurance companies will most likely not offer payment for a treatment without substantial evidence and is isn’t really fair to charge a client for a treatment that may or may not work if they have other evidence based options. If the therapist can prove that the non evidence based treatment is medically necessary and the only reasonable treatment for the client, then the insurance company should pay for the treatment.

The process of becoming an adult learner has been a difficult decision. Over twenty years ago, I graduated from a three year hospital based nursing diploma program. During this time evidence based practice consisted of nursing case studies and nursing diagnoses with written rationales using the term “as evidence by”. Clinical rotations involved retrieving your patient information, prior to your clinical assignment and looking up diagnoses to develop a nursing care plan the following day. Evidence based care became imperative in nursing after common practices and procedures produced “burning questions”. The major question became how a nursing procedure can be performed better with measurable outcomes (Blais and Hayes, 2016).
A patient’s treatment needs may differ widely based on stage of their illness experience.
