The Speech that the Society Does Not Want to Hear Generations to generation, women were taught by the society that women could not speak up about our privacy to anyone or the public. Every Christian woman knows that we have a common evil spiritual enemy. He hates us! He influences men and even woman to rape, abuse, kill and oppress us with cultural rules that put women down as an object. However, women were not created to be a slave of the evil. We were created to have abundant, happy and healthy life. Believing in these concepts, I really enjoyed the Vagina Monologues because open my eyes to reflect how we must deal with our intimacy. First, in the Vagina Monologues were exemplified how women’s life were deteriorated by their husband.
In both The Bell Jar and Enormous Changes at the Last Minute, we often see women as being subordinate to men. For example, in "Debts", one of Grace Paley's characters is happy because she has found "a husband to serve"(Paley, Enormous Changes at the Last Minute, 11). Her life has no meaning apart from her role as wife. She is defined by her husband. The idea that women are defined by their husband is so pervasive that we even find it in the language of the stories. In "The Burdened Man" there is a newspaper article describing the shooting of a wife and her lover by her husband. The husband and the lover are called by name, Sgt. Armand Kielly and Alfred Ciaro, respectively. The wife is only referred to as Mrs. Kielly. In The Bell Jar, when Buddy Willard proposes to Esther, he asks her "How would you like to be Mrs. Buddy Willard?"(Plath, The Bell Jar, 75). In both these instances, the language used defines the women in terms of their husband. This casual indication of dominance says a great deal about the culture.

This exemplifies how men not only use women for their wealth, but for their beauty as well. The doctor's son put his wife on the balcony to show off, to boast about, to bring light to his extravagant way of living. “As the years passed, the doctor became a millionaire” (Ferré 486). In no point in “The Youngest Doll” did either of the women realize the ways in which they were being used. The female gender role in society has created a torturous fate for those who have failed in their role as a woman, whether as a mother, a daughter, or a wife. The restrictive nature of the role that society imposes on women causes extreme repercussions for those women who cannot fulfill their purpose as designated by society. These repercussions can be as common as being reprimanded or as severe as being berated or beaten by a husband or father. The role that women were given by society entails being a submissive homemaker who dotes on her husband and many children. The wife keeps the home impeccably neat, tends to the children and ensures their education and well-being, and acts obsequiously to do everything possible to please her husband. She must be cheerful and sweet and pretty, like a dainty little doll. The perfect woman in the eyes of society is exactly like a doll: she always smiles, always looks her best and has no feelings or opinions that she can truly call her own. She responds only to the demands of her husband and does not act or speak out of turn. A woman who speaks her mind or challenges the word of any man, especially her husband, is undesirable because she is not the obedient little doll that men cherish. Women who do not conform to the rules that society has set for them are downgraded to the only feature that differentiates them from men; their sex. Society’s women do not speak or think of sex unless their husband requires it of them. But when a woman fails to be the doll that a man desires, she is worth nothing more than a cheap sex object and she is disposed of by society.
By dissecting the film, the director, Jennie Livingston's methodology and the audience's perceived response I believe we can easily ignore a different and more positive way of understanding the film despite the many flaws easy for feminist minds to criticize. This is in no way saying that these critiques are not valid, or that it is not beneficial to look at works of any form through the many and various feminist lenses.

Although all women are being oppressed in the patriarchal society at that time, Glaspell uses this play as a feminist glory in a witty way to win over men. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters solve the crime by reflecting on Minnie Wright’s unhappy marriage that leads her to murdering. Using the relationship between female and male characters throughout the play, Glaspell speaks up to emphasize how the patriarchal society underestimated women’s rights and restricted women’s desires.
This fact plays a crucial role in the mood of the play. If the reader understands history, they also understand that women did not really amount to any importance, they were perceived more as property.
Woman’s constant metaphors upset Man and portrays his loss of identity because it was something he previously enjoyed. In the play the audience can see this as it is illustrated through their dialogue when Woman states “You used to like my turns of phrases,” and Man replies with “That’s before I started rehab.” This infers that his transition has not been easy for him, but rather harder than he had initially expected and has taken a toll on his identity. Further, as Man describes his surroundings to Woman it is a very plain description, and no real vivid imagery until Woman pushes it on him to be more vivid. Man is being reserved in this dialogue which the reader can infer is connected to his anger and difficulty with being in rehab. However, the only time Man spoke descriptively was when he described the room. The room symbolized a lot of negativity and dreadfulness towards his current situation. He goes as far as to directly incline that he really wishes that he can have an alcoholic beverage. Thus, his description of the room clearly shows the reader the distress he is

Edith Hamilton, "recognized as the greatest woman Classicist", says that the Bible is the only book before our century that looked to women as human beings, no better nor worse than men (Tanner). However, it cannot be said that this book was consistently favorable to women.
