Particularly, Landrieu has made affordability for college education and creating easier access to the middle class her major campaign theme. Her solution to this is to create easier access to post-secondary education. Landrieu has focused on two viable options to create an easier path to the middle class. The first option is to increase the purchasing power of the Federal Pell Grant for college students. The second option is a loan refinancing option that will help lower the amount of student debts accumulated during the college years. Coastal issues are also a major theme in Landrieu’s campaign, as she says she will fight for the coastal communities. Hurricane protection, wetland restoration, navigation, commercial fisheries and even future land use are all areas that Landrieu advocated as major issues she will combat if reelected. Landrieu has also made energy reform as a major aspect of her campaign. Landrieu’s goal is to make the U.S. energy independent. The Louisiana Purchase stands as an iconic event today that nearly doubled the size of America, ultimately introducing the United States as a world power. In 1762, during the Seven Years’ War, France ceded its control of the Louisiana Territory to Spain (Britannica). However, when Napoleon Bonaparte assumed control of France in 1799, France rallied as a world power once more. Bonaparte’s interest in the Louisiana Territory spiked, and he pressured Spain’s king, Charles IV to relinquish his control of the land on October 1, 1800. This was known as the Treaty of San Ildefonso (Britannica). In view of the transfer between France and Spain, president Thomas Jefferson sent Robert R. Livingston to Paris in 1801. Jefferson became worried, because
In a state known for its apples, and nicknamed the “Evergreen State” looms a bitter battle between Democrat Incumbent Senator Patty Murray and Representative Linda Smith (Republican) for the only U.S. Senate seat open in the state of Washington. Washington has been historically Democratic for years. But changes in the state’s economy and a low amount of challengers have led to political instability in the Evergreen State. In recent times, while the state has voted Democratic in the last three presidential elections, Washington voted Republican for president in the previous elections in the 1970’s and 1980’s. A Democrat has held the governor’s mansion since 1984. Control in the Senate, House, and state legislature is split. In 1994, Washington’s House delegation shifted more than any other state’s, with six of nine seats moving from Democrats to Republican. Conservative Republicans maintained their dominance in these same races in 1996. Democratic Sen. Patty Murray is one of three women elected in 1992 (“The Year of the Woman”) who is seeking re-election this year. Murray ran her campaign in 1992 with the slogan “Mom in tennis shoes.” Born on October 11th, 1950, Sen. Murray began her bout in politics as an educator running for the Shoreline School Board. She won the position and was on the school board from 1983-1989. Sen. Murray ran and won the Washington State Senate seat from 1989-1993.
The culture of Louisiana is not one general set of customs and beliefs shared by all those who live in the area. Louisiana is a state in which many different elements are mixed together to create what can be described as Southern Louisianan culture. The two most predominant elements which make up the culture within the southern region of the state are the cultures of the Creoles and the Cajuns, which have many different influences within them. A complex blend of many different elements including religion, language, music, and food, create the unique culture of the Cajuns and the Creoles in the region of Southern Louisiana.
The Laramie Project, written by Moisés Kaufman, is a compilation of interviews by The Tectonic Theater Project, news publications, and journal entries. After the brutal murder of Mathew Sheppard in 1998. Kaufman along with his theater troupe made six visits to Laramie, Wyoming, where the murder took place, to interview people about what happened and how they felt about the crime in their community. They interviewed about two hundred people, of which about sixty were included in the play. The play showcases a small town in America in a historical time of tragedy. The production of The Laramie Project was simple. The stage setting was minimal and the the actors consisted of eight people portraying more than sixty. Through the patchwork of interviews The Laramie Project conveys the themes of identity, representation, and change.

The Louisiana Purchase posed several moral dilemmas for Thomas Jefferson among these were many difficult factors to consider. Firstly it went against his strict constructionists views. There was also much opposition to buying the vast land. Lastly he could not ignore that if the French gained controlled of this region it could lead to severe problems that he could not ignore. This was a very big decision for President Thomas Jefferson and he was very conflicted about it but with much consideration he decided to make a deal that would end up changing the fate of American forever. One of the most vital dilemmas Jefferson faced was that purchasing of Louisiana went against all his
On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was finalized, which resulted in the transfer of power over the territory from France to the United States. The Louisiana Purchase (1803) served as the catalyst for Westward Expansion in American society. Furthermore, it was an examination of conscience for President Thomas Jefferson, as he grappled with the constitutionality of an acquisition of this magnitude. In addition to this, the Louisiana Purchase (1803) transformed America into the industrial and agricultural giant it has become. Had it not been for the Louisiana Purchase (1803), America as we know it today would not exist.
Culture is a way of life that is current and it represents who you are. It's a lot of things dealing with culture, but the main three I'm going to focus on are: food, music, and events. I'm going to talk about what dish Louisiana is most known for. How everyone comes to Louisiana to celebrate these most known events. And also, how we live in the same state but people grew up listening to different music.
One early winter morning, GHS administrators received a call about students skipping classes at the bayou. The landlord, of a nearby apartment complex told administrators that she has seen this same group of boys several times. She expressed her concern for the students as well of patrons of the nearing neighborhoods. Campus police was dispatched to verify the claim, Officer Adams returned with 4 Hispanic males that had in fact been skipping class at the bayou. All 4 young boys admitted to being under the influence of marijuana after failing a neurological exam, performed by the school nurse. About midway through the investigation the lead administrator, Assistant Principal Custer, noticed the continued strength in scent on one of the young
America has been in a rut for the past decade. What America needs is change, and not the kind that was promised by the current President. Jill Stein is running a representative of the Green Party, and it shows in all of her plans. Stein’s agenda involves moving the government’s attention from big corporations to the little man, and also shifting the focus on fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. Stein’s vision for a better America are the reasons why she is the best candidate for president.
In the words of Claiborne Pell, U.S. Senator of Rhode Island and sponsor of the Pell Grant, which provides financial aid to American college students, “The strength of the United States is not the gold at Fort Knox or the weapons of mass destruction that we have, but the sum total of the education and the character of our people.” These words speak of the importance of education and the need for public support in order to continue America’s tradition of investment in our youth being an investment in our country.
Both cases have a similar situation that calls for immediate action in order to save the lives of people
The overarching theme in the section regarding the Louisiana Purchase is Environment and Geography. In this section , the Jefferson Administration was astonished by the unexpected and abrupt acceptance of the American offer on the part of Napoleon to sell the vast Louisiana territory. Jefferson accepted the deal without much hesitation fearing that while waiting for some type of treaty to be authorized by the government, Napoleon might have a change of heart. The United States paid a sum of $15 million dollars to the French, as wella s granting special concessions in the commercial sector. Jefferson was unsure of at first if the act of the president accepting the deal was constitutional, yet the congress would effectively
Education should be affordable and supported better through taxation. A fair and balanced living wage needs to be addressed as there are too many people living in poverty. Gun restrictions, that include background checks and training are much needed in our country. Voting requirements under Stein’s platform, involves every citizen to be issued a voter I.D at the age of 18. This seems like a logical solution to ensure legal votes and support a greater voter turnout.
The political situation in Mauritius is in ebullition with the Labour Party (MLP) holding on to power with a slim majority in Parliament. The defection of the Movement Socialist Mauricien (MSM) from the government, it is believed, could endanger Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam's rule. The ongoing crisis maybe the chance for Paul Berenger to grab power for the last time.
