A mission statement is a very important piece to a college or university. It can provide faculty, administrators, and students the overall goals of a college or university. A mission statement or simply a mission, is a public declaration that schools or educational organizations use to describe their founding purpose and major organizational commitments (Hidden Curriculum, 2014). In other words, what the college does and why they do what they do. A mission statement may also describe its broad academic and operational assurances, as well its commitment to students and the community (Hidden Curriculum, 2014). It is important for colleges and universities to acquire a successful mission statement but also carry out their mission statement on …show more content…
Their mission and goal is not only to prepare students but enhance the world as a whole. When looking at a college or universities Division of Student Affairs, it is important for them to have a mission that is compatible with that college or university missions statement. The University of Illinois mission statement is compatible with their Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs mission statement says, “We fulfill the mission of the University of Illinois by engaging in programs and services that create transformative learning experiences, foster success and prepare the leaders of tomorrow in a diverse and global society,” (University of Illinois, 2014, Student Affairs Strategic Plan, p.2). In other words, the student affairs department wants to serve their students in the best possible way by creating learning experiences that will prepare them for the global society which is closely related to the Universities mission …show more content…
Renee stated, that in the Department of Student Affairs they work very hard to be in sync with the University’s mission (personal communication, September 11th, 2015). She provided many ways of how this is done. The department supports and teaches students outside the classroom, they transform lives through out-of-class experiences, and prepare the global leaders of tomorrow (R. Romano, personal communication, September 11th, 2015). Renee also mentions the importance of their Student Affairs Strategic Plan. The Student Affairs Strategic Plan completely mirrors the University’s strategic plan but has established specific initiatives relevant to student affairs (R. Romano, personal communication, September 11th, 2015). This shows the relationship between both mission statement and how it important it is for the missions to be practiced and have a purpose. Renee also mentioned how she personally carries out the institution and divisions mission, but could not answer for everyone within student affairs at the University. Renee reinforces and carries out the mission statement is by including it in publications, communication, creating out-of-class student experiences, and using assessments to assure that the programs and services are meeting their objectivities (Personal communication,

4. Since the student Senate was founded, the campus has maintained essentially one goal: to upgrade the quality of its student-related services. Supported for two years by the opinions of three consultants provided by the National Council of Student Governing Boards, the Senate was confident it was operating from a base of quality. However, it felt if, given additional monetary support from the administration, a significant improvement in student services would be easier. This was a reasonable prediction as in the past fifteen months one additional monetary resource was provided by the administration to the Senate.
is important that student affairs professionals understand the different types of institutions because this is one way that an institution type can affect the work that is accomplished by the student affairs practitioner in a positive way or negative way depending on what you are looking for when
Mission statement is the reason why a company exists. Mission statement differentiates a company from others in the same industry. Carpenter, Taylor, and Erdogan believed that: “A mission statement communicates the organization’s reason for being, and how it aims to serve its key stakeholders” (Carpenter, Taylor, Erdogan, 2009, p.77). A clearly stated mission statement helps employees and other stakeholders define core values and business values of the company in the industry. In this paper I analyze the mission statement of AGCO Corporate in the industry of agricultural machinery and equipment.
...ion and success. While much has been researched, the journey has only just begun. Very briefly I have highlighted a topic that has been and still could be researched with hundreds of different auxiliary issues stemming from it. Delving further into what student life departments do for student retention and success and their role in this process is a very important piece of this ever expanding puzzle. There is not a lot of literature or research on the topic right now and while this specific question is still a very broad topic, it can easily be narrowed down and sectioned off for more specific goals and research. What we need but do not have a whole lot of yet is a body of research that delves into the nature of institutional practices when it comes to student life departments, their theories and practices and the impact they have on student success and retention.
Gow writes that without a mission statement most independent schools feel insufficient and partial. Schools therefore pick mission statements that reflect the school’s policies and programs pointing them to the desirable future and present the purpose of the school. (Gow, 2009)
The Perspective on Student Affairs, 1987 was issued by the American Council on Education. The statement revised in 1949, served as the foundational document for student affairs professionals. However, NASPA President Chambers approved the Plan for a New Century Committee by Arthur Sandeen, vice President of student affairs. In June 1987, the committee completed consultations, deliberations, and prepared reports for “A Perspective on Student Affairs.
The Gonzaga mission statement excites me! Working for the common good while developing as a whole person is vital for anyone and especially a student like me. The Mission statement is clearly written, I was thoroughly engaged me while reading it. “Developing intellectually, spiritually, physically and emotionally”, as stated in the Mission statement is what captivated my attention. Gonzaga University’s values then goes into detail about how to fulfill Gonzaga’s mission.
When I first visited Spelman College my junior year of highschool, I gawked at the beauty that was Spelman’s campus. From the blooming flowers to the new Science Center, I was in love. However, once I entered the pearly gates of the illustrious Spelman College with my white dress and perfected Spelman hand, I became critical of my learning environment. There is no such things as a perfect school and as a student, I love Spelman College too much to not critique it. The Spelman College Student Government Association ensures that the voices of students are heard throughout all facets of the college-from finance to academics-and I am applying to be an intern for the Secretary of Academic Affairs in order to gain an understanding of what it means to be a SGA Officer, but to also gain an understanding of the day-to-day obligations of the Secretary of Academic Affairs.
Reflecting on my professional philosophy as it pertains to Student Affairs; I believe Student Affairs should be comprised of several different entities, which individually fits the needs of every student. Based on the foundational components of Student Affairs, which lends itself towards my philosophy in directly supporting and helping students discover their purpose, goals/objectives and striving for internal growth. Clearly, a very tough and arguable a large task to conquer, despites some of my beliefs, my main intent is to foster growth. Obviously, many of my beliefs coincide with Student Affairs identity, as we come to know it from today’s perspective view. Therefore, Student Affairs, has taken on a very different identity, which has gradually
Rutgers University’s mission statement, as defined through the following excerpt, is required to be applied to every Rutgers University organization. All Rutgers University organizations are asked to abide by the mission statement of the university in order to foster a community that is cohesive and indivisible:
A mission statement is “a set of organizational goals that include both the purpose of the organization, its scope of operations and the basis of its competitive advantage (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner, & McNamara, 2014).” The mission statement should concentrate on the present. It will define critical processes within the organization, while defining the company’s purpose and objectives. The primary audience should be stakeholders (consumer, employees, suppliers and owners) as well as leadership. Overall it should state the fundamental purpose of the organization.
An effective mission statement is meant to convey what a person, or organization, wants to accomplish in their job, and often their mission statement includes aspects of their teaching philosophy. For my mission statement, I do believe it reflects my teaching philosophy. It shows that I want to not only teach the material so that students do well base on state standards since state testing is now so controversial, but I also want them to be able to form their own opinions and can be successful later in life as well as at the time of
The core value that has been most developed over my first semester is personal development. This core value shows that Saint Leo University stresses the development of every person’s mind, spirit, and body for a balanced life.Where all members of the the University community show their commitment to this value to help strengthen
Student’s affairs is a department or division of services that provides support for students at institutions of higher education. They help enhance student growth and development throughout the country and abroad. There are many branches of student affairs varying from the dean of students to even the community director at your dorm. The job they do can be stressful at time and can go highly unnoticed at times. They are an integral part of the students life to help them deal with their stress or the hard times from their classes or even their personal life and to make their life at institution easier.
