The case of Tyler Clementi This case was caused by a Twitter message, on September 19th 2011, a Twitter account had updated, “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay”. (A Framework for Ethical Decision Making) According the news, the account owner is a Rutgers college student, Dharun Ravi, he monitors all the affectionate behaviors of his roommate, Tyler Clementi, with a hidden camera in the dormitory. Three days later, Tyler Clementi jumped from the George Washington Bridge to the Hudson River. Certainly, it was a suicide. Even Ravi was found guilty of invasion of privacy, hindering apprehension and witness tampering, etc. But I still will use the following three frameworks, Utilitarianism, Social Contract, and Virtues ethics, to explain what punishment is fitting the crime and express my thought on this case. Under the Utilitarianism, “Some ethicists emphasize that the ethical action is the one that provides the most good or does I think we should forgive Ravi because tolerance is one of the example of virtues. When people curse Ravi with the dirty words on the internet, do you realize that, your action is cyberbullying. It is irony, because we noticed to prevent cyberbullying finally, but we joined to a cyberbullying. In the interview, Clementi’s parents said that, they were not angry in Ravi, but they were just sad in the whole situation. They also indicated that, they did not expect apologize, but certainly, it would be welcomed.
