Diversity of Family Technology has become a ubiquitous presence in today’s society. Media plays a considerable role in influencing elementary aged students view on culture, acceptable behaviors, and gender roles. The two TV series, Jessie and Lab Rats are examples of popular shows that elementary students enjoy watching. Both shows target ages 9-16 and air on the popular Disney Channel. This paper will discuss the culture and stereotypes present in each of these shows. The TV series, Jessie is set in the Upper West Side of New York City. Jessie is a nanny for a wealthy family of four culturally diverse, adopted siblings. However, it captures the interest of children as young as age six. The show does have sarcastic humor and pokes fun at the expense of the culture represented on the show. Due to the culturally diverse make-up, various stereotypes are present in the show. Jessie is a young Texas woman with a strong accent and southern tendencies. Emma, the only biological child, is a ‘typical’ wealthy teenage girl whose priorities are shopping, friends, and her cell phone. Luke is an American adoptee who is depicted as a dumb jock. Indian adoptee, Ravi, is the character most connected to his culture. He is extremely naïve to American culture and is the complete opposite of Luke. However, the cultural difference was referenced when Ravi first entered the scene dressed in his Sherwani and explained it was worn for important events in his culture. Social acceptance is a struggle for many young children. Ravi felt rejected by Luke, therefore, he chose to change his image. In order to fit in, it is common for youth to consider altering their appearance and values for the ultimate goal of acceptance.
