The current false definition of criminal profiling is any process clarifying ideas about a desirable criminal. The saga of profilers being born with an instinctual talent was soon dismissed. The profiler’s intuitive tends to lead them off track which causes them to waste time. Turvey points out that criminals think differently than most people and that behavior means something different between cultures and from place to place. Behavioral evidence examination must be energetic procedure since the effective criminal’s procedures become more sophisticated over the years. A criminal profiler must be a demonstration, director, interpreter, and mentor to the different groups of the investigator branch with proof rather than myths. Teamwork is important as well as sharing information with other team members.
There are always different skills associated with a team, regardless of the years of practice. Even though provide clinical consultations for the analysis, treatment, and courtroom skill assessment, they are not allowed to do the work of a criminal profiler. There are many theories that can be applied to different cases that have occurs in Americas history. The two theories that are choses for this paper are the trait theory and under the trait theory is psychological which is “abnormal personality and psychological traits are the key to determinant of anti-social behavior. There is a link between mental illness, personality disorders and crime (Siegel, 2014). The second theory is the Choice theory which “criminals weigh the cost and benefits and make a conscious, rational choice to commit crime” (Siegel, 2014). Historically, crime and criminals have always caught the attention of law-abiding citizens. Whenever there is mention of serial killers or unsolved murders or abductions, psychological profiling, now a household term, floats to the top of the list of concerns (Egger, 1999). Psychological profiling is an attempt to provide investigators with more information about an offender who has not yet been identified (Egger, 1999). Its purpose is to develop a behavioral composite that combines both sociological and psychological assessment of the would-be offender. It is generally based on the premise that an accurate analysis and interpretation of the crime scene and other locations related to the crime can indicate the type of person who could have committed the crime (Egger, 1999).
LITERATURE REVIEW "Criminal profiling is the development of an investigation by means of obtainable information regarding an offence and crime scene to compile a psychosomatic representation of the known architect of the crime." (Douglas and Olshaker, 1995 quoted in Muller, 2000:235). But unfortunately what the media has done is portray the science of profiling into a more precognitive clairvoyant capability which is far from the truth. Criminal profiling comes from the use of the characteristics of an offender’s crime scene and the behavioral patterns they demonstrate. In this article the two authors research the connection between genetic factors and criminal behavior. They look at the causes that make someone act in a criminal way. There are several factors looked at in connection to the cause such as social factors and environmental variables. The social factors being the more examined of the two. They hypothesized that other factors in performance or alone with environmental variables would lead to better understanding of why some people become criminal. The genetic factor of influence due to mental disorders was posed to have a slight role in affecting people to show criminal behavior. Another cause looked at was the combination of genetic and environmental factors, with a possible result of having a higher risk for criminal behavior.

In today’s society, one will find that there are many different factors that go into the development of a criminal mind, and it is impossible to single out one particular cause of criminal behavior. Criminal behavior often stems from both biological and environmental factors. In many cases criminals share similar physical traits which the general population do not usually have. For example criminals have smaller brains than properly adjusted individuals. However biological reasons cannot solely be the cause of criminal behavior. Therefore, one must look to other sources as to how a criminal mind is developed. Social and environmental factors also are at fault for developing a person to the point at which they are lead to committing a criminal act. Often, someone who has committed a violent crime shows evidence of a poorly developed childhood, or the unsuitable current conditions in which the subject lives. In addition if one studies victimology which is the role that the victim plays in the crime, it is apparent that there are many different causes for criminal behavior. I now know that criminology prefer to highlight the correlations between crimes’ social climates and criminals’ psychological states of mind. I have come to learn that there are no universally agreed formulas on decoding crimes and criminal behaviors. What we have, however, is a manual full of academic opinions and subjective views that have emerged alongside of the development of criminology. At the same time, the volume of conflicting perspectives that I have stumble upon in studying criminology reminded me again that the success of our current assessment models has yet to be determined.
