For someone to be courageous they must overcome challenges and obstacles instead of backing down. There are many who have battled fear, but there are a few who come out victorious and can be truly recognized as courageous. In order for a person to be truly courageous, they have to do things that others are not willing to do. Ender Wiggin shows his courage by standing up for himself and those that are close to him and by breaking the rules and going against the authority.

Enders shows this when Bonzo again ordered him to this time back off and to not shoot during the battle against the other army in the Battle room. At the very end of the battle Ender once again shows his courage by disobeying his commanders orders and taking part in the battle. This shows that Ender makes decisions for what he feels is right, even if that means to break rules. He decided to disobey Bonzo to save Salamander army from a loss, if this was another solider in Salamander army they would have listened because of the fear of Bonzo. Ender demonstrates this again at the very end of the book, Ender decides to help the Buggers find a new home even when he knew that helping the Buggers was against the rules of the International fleet. Ender does this because he realizes that the buggers were innocent and that they only came to Earth to colonize, the humans on the other side decided to kill all the Buggers and Ender himself played a huge role of killing the Bugger colony. Courageousness may seem to be measured by the people look on the outside. They look brave, heroic, and have some luck. Now, if someone looked on the inside of that person what would they see. Would they see a mentally strong person with high values in what they believe. On the opposition, the person might find out how scared, mean, and vulnerable they are. Courageousness is how little a person's values are affected when opposition and suffering happen in life. Also, doing things that they fear doing to boost their confidence and defeat their fears, this is courage. In A Separate Peace, The character Finny, who is bright and looking like he is brave all the time might seem to be the obvious candidate for being more courageous than Gene. Gene,who has little bravery an is weak. Gene though is actually the more courageous one because of his willingness to fight for his values and stand up in the face of opposition.
Ender is first shown as intelligent and skillful, and Peter shows the same attributes throughout the story. Ender uses his intellect to triumph over his bullies, and this translates to his experience in the Battle Room. He has to outsmart the enemy, rather than beat them physically, and it worked in his favor the majority of the time. Ender understands when he has to use his physicality to beat a bully, but also knows when he has to strategize to avoid a certain situation. When Ender is encountered by Bonzo after he won the battle by disobeying Bonzo’s orders, he has to use his judgement rather than his fists to get what he wants. Ender argued with Bonzo, “‘... I’ll pretend that you won this argument. Then tomorrow you can tell me you changed your mind.’ ‘I don’t need you to tell me what to do.’ ‘I don’t want the other guys to think you backed down. You wouldn’t be able to command as well’” (Card 87). Ender understands what his enemy, in this case Bonzo, wants, and knows how he can make both of them get what they want. He doesn’t resolve to violence when he knows that he can use a different method that benefits him. Ender’s intelligence and strategizing helps him overcome the difficulty he approaches throughout his life. Peter also uses his intellect to benefit himself throughout the events that happen.
In Ender’s Game, a science fiction novel written by Orson Scott Card, many people meet many challenges that make them move forward. One of the challenges involved in this novel is isolation. Graff isolates Ender, the protagonist, because he has an excellent mind (Card 34). In addition, the World Government trusts Ender to defeat the buggers, which will destroy the entire human race, in the next invasion (Card 34). Therefore, isolation makes him prepare to become a stronger person. Another challenge discovered in this novel is the struggle between Ender and Bonzo. According to Card, Ender gains respect from his friends, since he wins the battle between Ender’s Dragon’s army and Bonzo’s Salamander’s army (Card 181-182). As a matter of fact, Bonzo cannot accept the lost (Card 195). Prior to Ender’s leadership in his army, Bonzo is cruel, he gives a lot of orders, and one incident is when he has slapped Ender for disobeying him (Card 77, 86-87, 95). A commander that pushed around his soldiers and put them down. But he knew why. He thought, “Graff had isolated [me] to make [me] struggle” (Card 167). He was beginning to be like the people he hated because of his own isolation. He was supposed to struggle so he didn’t feel like anyone would help him but that only made his situation worse. Once again, knowing who the real enemy was was a key step to defeating the real enemy. Truly knowing your enemy can help a lot when trying to defeat them.
Throughout the book Ender does not want to become a killer like his brother, and after Ender does turn into the monster that he swore not to become he decides to separate himself from the people he could hard. “I`m a murderer … Peter would be proud…” (Card 65). Although the hero leaving their journey is usually a bad thing, Ender`s descent is justified y the fact that he is doing it for the safety of others. Page 218 describes Ender’s men passed through the gate without soldiers before the gate was reversed. He had to cheat because he was exhausted and he needed assistance. Ender was battling two teams at once, never done before at battle school.. Finally every game has a final stage or battle. In Ender’s Game the final battle was against the buggers. Ender fights them on page 297. Ender was actually tricked into fighting them. This point proves how life is a game because games have a final battle/stage and Ender fought in one. Ender as a game piece, cheating and fighting in a final stage/battle prove how life is a game.
In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Enders Game, at the age of six, Ender is chosen by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to help save mankind from the buggers. However, through his journey, he experiences manipulation and deception from significant figures that surround his life. This deceit from Colonel Graff, Valentine, and Mazor Rackham is focused on defeating the buggers in the Third Invasion.
Many people have their own definition of courage some may think of bravery, daring, determination and so many more synonyms, My word to describe courage would be boldness. In the Crucible the turn of events showed the characters true colors and their weaknesses, These two characters that will be desrcribed have showed boldness in a positive and negitive way.
To be courageous, it doesn't mean you have to save a city, or fight against an evil villain (although being courageous). To be courageous, all you have to do is be brave and express yourself. I related to Ender with many of the decisions that he was forced to make. I agree with his philosophy about ending the fight so that no more fights can grow from it, finishing your opponent, but only in self defense, and standing up too bully's. Ender's game reminded me of countries that expect to much for their children, and that would give everything for them to succeed, almost like overprotective parents.
In some points of this book, the children are naive and do not completely know what is going on around them. This allows the government to be able to manipulate them very easily. But, as the book goes on the readers realise the children are more aware and in fact smarter than the adults in many ways, in both the war and just in general. The government is still able to have some control over the children because they can manipulate them into doing what they want without them knowing. This causes Ender to experience a lot of manipulation from the very beginning of this book. Ender, as well as the other children in this book, continue to suffer from manipulation throughout the whole book. In the beginning of chapter 11 we assume that Graff and Anderson are talking, but we do not know who is saying what. We can infer that Anderson says to Graff, ‘“This is best for Ender, too. We’re bringing him to his full potential.”’ (Card 173). Anderson and Graff always talk about what is ‘best for Ender’, but they are really only thinking about themselves because all they do is push Ender to his breaking point. So is it really what is ‘best for Ender’ or is it what is best for the government?
