Ender`s Game, by Orson Scott Card, follows Ender Wiggins and how he grows into a hero. Ender shows heroism throughout his endeavours in Battle School, he faces many trials to deserve the title of ‘Hero’. Ender`s descent into darkness, although in most stories is seem as a bad thing, is prefaced by his reasoning behind why he chooses to, he shows traits of a hero. Thirdly, his arsenal of weapons, along with how he uses them truly sets his heroic nature in stone. All heroes must display many traits and overcome perilous obstacles to deserve his reputation as a hero, Ender Wiggins displays all the requirements to be a great hero. Ender faces trials all throughout his journey, he is given choices that will not only affect himself, but possibly all of humanity. Ender has many goals to achieve throughout the story, but first he must overcome the trials given to him. He must first overcome his brother, Peter, the Giants Drink, and finally the adults who run the Battle School (Card 80). After Ender completes all his trials and reaches the final goal, he has shown how he is able to behave like a hero even when his journey becomes difficult or even impossible. Throughout the book Ender does not want to become a killer like his brother, and after Ender does turn into the monster that he swore not to become he decides to separate himself from the people he could hard. “I`m a murderer … Peter would be proud…” (Card 65). Ender is selected to go to Battle School in space because of the actions he has displayed against a bully after a device known as a monitor, which allows the leaders of the I.F. to watch and hear everything Ender perceives. Although Ender’s conception was predetermined (in this time period, families are only allowed to have two children unless stated by the government which is why Ender is often called a “Third”), he had to display the correct characteristics to be selected. Ender’s siblings, Peter and Valentine also wore the monitor, but neither wore it as long nor was selected because Peter was too cruel and Valentine was too mild. Once Ender arrives, he makes a couple new friends from the other selected children, including a boy named Alai. When Ender is alone, he plays a mind game and progresses farther than anyone has before so out of the blue, Ender becomes promoted to a group called Salamander Army, where he befriends the only girl, Petra Arkanian, at Battle School. Petra and Dink are warning ender to always be accompanied by somebody and to never be alone. That night Ender’s only way of falling asleep is by thinking about how the teachers will protect him outside the battle room if he truly means something to them. The next day after winning two battles he falls asleep and wakes up just a little before lunch time. Carelessly he walked in to take a shower, until Bonzo and other seven boys come up on him. Bonzo is the boys in the room that truly wants to kill Ender. In order for Ender to face him one-on-one he uses Bonzo’s honor to get the other boys to back down. Before the fight Dink rushes in, but is held back by the other boys as he tries to prevent the fight from happening. Ender provokes Bonzo and when Bonzo charges at him ender quickly hits Bonzo’s head with his face. To prevent from Bonzo trying to attack again Ender hits him in the ribs and crotch, but Bonzo does not move. Dink later takes Ender away from the bathroom as the teachers that were supposed to protect him come rushing in. Ender’s later reminded of Bonzo’s face when he first hit him and Stilson’s face too and later begins to cry. Ender is given another battle with two armies at the same time, but he is completely done with battles even after winning. Ender is informed by Bean that his toon leaders had been promoted along with their assistants too. They are now commanders including Bean himself. In Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, we see the life, struggles, and choices of Ender Wiggin. After reading the book, we as the readers can interpret what we believe the book was meant to accomplish in terms of the moral questions it raises. Some believe that Card wrote the book as a self-serving justification of Enders actions. However, I believe that the story is not a justification of Enders actions, but instead an illustration of the abuse and mistreatment of a young child.
He is still constantly comparing himself to Peter. In a game Ender played, he had to kill a snake in order to progress which haunts him with thoughts of killing. “‘This game tells filthy lies. I am not like Peter. I don’t have murder in my heart.’ And then a worse fear, that he was the killer, only better at it than Peter ever was.” (Card 115). He is starting to believe that he is not like Peter, however the thought of being no better and maybe even worse than his brother is still in the back of his mind. At this time in the book, Ender seems very opinionated when he compares himself to Peter, and stays that way for quite a while. In chapter eight, Ender is battling a group of boys and ends up hurting them to protect himself. He is later seen questioning why he keeps harming other boys. “I’m doing it again, thought Ender. I’m hurting people again just to save myself. Why don’t they leave me alone, so I don’t have to hurt them.” (Card 115). Now Ender is wondering as to why these people keep attacking him. Ender’s Game is both entertaining and thought-provoking; but while the author cleverly questions the ethics of war, education, and humanity, this book’s greatest lessons are about what it means to be a good leader, which ties into the Marine Corps perfectly because that is what we strive to do. Ender Wiggin is the third in a family of child geniuses. He is selected by international military forces to save the world from destruction. Before being chosen Ender wears a unique monitor that allows the heads of the military to see things as he does. Ender's brother Peter and his sister Valentine also wore this monitor, although neither were selected, and Peter will never forgive Ender for this. After much internal debate Ender decides to go to battle school and leave home. He knows he won’t see his family until he is at least 12 but most likely he will have to wait until he is 16. When Ender is inside the ship on the way to battle school, the adults start their manipulation game. Graff calls out Ender as the only one who will save mankind, making the other kids hate Ender and become envious. Ender already lost the chance at having a normal childhood when he was born a third, but he was also considered to be the chosen one to save mankind from the very beginning. The manipulation of Ender is shown through the book and the children at the school either take part in his abuse or ignore the adults who cause it. Through this abusive training tactic Ender becomes the skilled fighter and leader the government wants. Ender gets moved through the program fast. He gets to the command school at age 9, a school no one can go to until they are sixteen. The adults tell him he will be doing simulations to practice the attacks on the buggers, but after the last simulation he finds out he killed the entire bugger species. The novel shows Ender to be morally innocent throughout his story, but he takes on the guilt of xenocide of the buggers. He is shocked at what he did, even when he didn’t know what he’s doing. Ender loses his innocence at this moment. He knew he was being manipulated by the adults throughout his career at the battle schools, but he had no idea he was being manipulated into exterminating a whole race. They are treated like they are adults and are purloined of their youth. During one of his practices, a group of older kids attack, and are injured by Ender in self-defense. Afterwards, Ender reflects, “I’m hurting people again, just to save myself. Why don’t they leave me alone, so I don’t have to hurt them?” (Card 115). Although Ender did resort to violence to protect himself, he reveals that he did not want to hurt people. Ender was only acting out of necessity to save himself. Ender shows that he does not wish to inflict harm, but instead wishes that other people would not attack him and force his hand. Thus, Ender displays his selfless character through his strong desire to not use violence so that no one else would be hurt. A similar scenario arises when Bonzo gathers a group of boys and tries to kill Ender in a fight. Ender wins the fight, but later breaks down and says, “‘I didn’t want to hurt him!’” (Card 213). He continues, “‘Why didn’t he just leave me alone?’”(Card 213). Similar to the earlier fight, Ender reveals that he did not want to inflict harm on Bonzo, but he was once again forced to do so to defend himself. This shows that the only reason he fought was in self-defense; he had no malicious intent to hurt Bonzo and would rather not hurt him. Thus, Ender’s use of violence does not disprove his
In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Enders Game, at the age of six, Ender is chosen by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to help save mankind from the buggers. However, through his journey, he experiences manipulation and deception from significant figures that surround his life. This deceit from Colonel Graff, Valentine, and Mazor Rackham is focused on defeating the buggers in the Third Invasion.
In some points of this book, the children are naive and do not completely know what is going on around them. This allows the government to be able to manipulate them very easily. But, as the book goes on the readers realise the children are more aware and in fact smarter than the adults in many ways, in both the war and just in general. The government is still able to have some control over the children because they can manipulate them into doing what they want without them knowing. This causes Ender to experience a lot of manipulation from the very beginning of this book. Ender, as well as the other children in this book, continue to suffer from manipulation throughout the whole book. In the beginning of chapter 11 we assume that Graff and Anderson are talking, but we do not know who is saying what. We can infer that Anderson says to Graff, ‘“This is best for Ender, too. We’re bringing him to his full potential.”’ (Card 173). Anderson and Graff always talk about what is ‘best for Ender’, but they are really only thinking about themselves because all they do is push Ender to his breaking point. So is it really what is ‘best for Ender’ or is it what is best for the government? The government manipulates Ender into becoming a soldier and then a commander so that he can eventually win the war, but is that what Ender really wants? Could he be better at doing something

Above all, however, isolation is the tool that made all the attributes transparent and viable to Ender and to the I.F. Beyond the war, Ender became more than just a tool to be used; he became a savior. A savior of not only one, but two different races bent on destroying each other.
